Can anyone suggest things to do in Austin and favorite restaurants?

Hit the music clubs!

My favorite restaurant is Z'Tejas, 1110 W 6th St. I see they have other places now but that's the original.

Eat a burger at Top Notch on Burnet Road. That's where all the kids in Dazed and Confused hung out. We didn't hang out there in 1976, Safeway was our hang out, but we did go there for lunch a lot. Good burgers.

You will have a blast here! I totally agree with Bob's advice, if you enjoy music hit the clubs on 6th Street.

Guero's Taco Bar - Good food/great margaritas
Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill - Reservations are highly recommended
Z' Tejas - I totally agree with Bob on this one.
Hopdoddy - Amazing burgers, gourmet fries, handcrafted beers and prickly pear margaritas
Austin Land & Cattle - Family owned steakhouse, take a wad of money
Home Slice Pizza - Our kids would eat here daily!
Hut's Hamburgers - Good burgers/shakes
Stubbs BBQ - Yes, if you've ever bought Stubb's Barbecue Sauce, this is the same Stubbs.
Franklin Barbecue - The top rated barbecue joint in the state according to Texas Monthly. However we have never eaten there because you need to plan on standing in line for up to an hour or more.
Amy's Ice Cream - There's one on SoCo but our favorite location is the store on 6th Street near Waterloo Records.
Gourdough's - "Home of the big fat donut" My personal favorites are "The Puddin'" and "Sin-A-Bomb".
Be sure to hit a food truck or two during your visit. I'm addicted to Torchy's Tacos myself!

The Driskill Hotel
Lots of cool graffiti - be sure to snap a photo of your family at the "I Love You So Much" mural at Jo's Coffee on South Congress
Mount Bonnell

ALC isn't too terribly priced but I do think that charging $2 for steak sauce is a bit much:

I'll agree with that if it's just A-1 or similar but look at the list on the menu I linked to. Yum!

I can add to this thread, but it would be helpful to know more details. Do you have specific plans to be in Austin? If so, when, and for how long? Where will you be staying? Will you have a car? Restaurant advice might not be date dependent, but things to do will change a lot.

The Austin Chronicle is a pretty good starting point for what's going on.

Jessie, are you my neighbor? It seems like you must be, since almost everything on your list is within walking distance of my house (or at least an easy bike ride). I'm a few blocks east of S. Congress, near Annie Street. Are you anywhere near there?

I'm not that close, but I'm in your area quite often. I had lunch at Hopdoddy's last week and was at Scholz Garten a few days ago.
