Hey there all you mangy peeps! MBRS here with this year's installment of everyone's favorite game in the whole, wide LSWE! Yes, for this week's Free For All Friday, it's time for me and the gang to put on a few more of those classic music videos from the 80's you know and love! Since I'm a redhead and not a blonde, I did learn something from last year's debacle and tried to incorporate more popular and well known videos in this year's game, while still throwing out a few challenges for the MTV experts out there! These videos are national treasures, and a culturally significant part of the 1980's.... even if none of them did star ME!!! Hmph! That's OK, me and my bologna ass are hitting the twerking tour this year.... later gators!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

It's hard enough identifying lyrics to songs I never intentionally listened to, when at least I had a chance to hear them now and again, in passing. But music videos aren't watched by accident.

Spoiler
My name is Friday. I'm a cop. An internet cop.

Image

It was late in the week and I decided to head to the sleazy part of town to bust a few heads and shakedown some pervs. Naturally I found myself at A Home For The Weary, where all the low lifes congregate for easy pickings. I'm not sure why they continue to hang out there, but it makes my life a little easier.

I figured that after I hosted Lyrically Speaking for the aptly-named Weasel back in November, the Bored addiction would pretty much dry up, since no one could top my awesome contribution. I should know never to underestimate the cult mentality of BBs. There they were, latching on to every post made by the most vile of them all, LB "Blue Boy" Carter.

Image

I checked the logs and realized he had posting his swill for over five weeks and BBs were eating it up like Elwood on a donut binge. I've tried talking sense into this group of low lifes, but they never listen.

I entered the latest thread to see what LB was up to. Maybe I could save one of them from this Bored crack called LS:

Image
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Or maybe it was "Pull My Finger". Based on his expression, he's about to let out a seam-splitter. Good thing he took the Yellow Brick Road out of town. Fewer casualties that way.

Image

Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top

Clearly the snaggle-toothed gator-looking one has been hanging here too long. The doorman would rather chew his own arm off rather than touch that hat. Even the gossiping chicks are saying "Someone should tell him he smells like a swamp."

Image
Hey, Miss cheerleader on top. Notice how all the others have a painted-on smile except the chick below you? I'll bet you promised her your skirt would be in front, not behind. Hers is clearly a "damn, no beav" look. Sorry sister, get used to disappointment with this crowd.

Image
It takes a while for some of the side-effects of "LS-itis" to fully mature. One unfortunate side effect is growing extra arms out of your torso. On the positive side, this BB can now simutaneously pick her nose, pick her ass, and keep four sailors happy all without dropping a note.

Image
Let's see, we have Tina Turner with a couple of shark snouts sticking out of her head, an armadillo playing a ukulele and some masked bandit trying to steal money from an ATM in an iceberg. Just another day in paradise, people.

Image

When I said T-Bone had a "checkered past" I didn't mean it literally. Looks like T-Bone and his band mates invited a groupie to their room for some post-concert fun. I guess no one explained to the boys what it meant when she said "You can all have a piece of me." And who says you can't enjoy sloppy seconds? Right Mr. Rainbow Drummer? Mmmmmmmmmm-good.

Image
This is the one in which the Eurythmics nail donuts to the wall, then sit around and play air keyboards. "Sweet Dreams" losers.

Image
Scandal in #11! At exactly 11:11, a Ravens player player (probably #11) brings the playbook of one Troy Smith (interception percentage 11% and he wore the numbers 10 and 1 which = 11) to Mr. Tangredi, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. Don't tell Christie!

or, it's Hot For Teacher by Van Halen

Image

I see nothing wrong with this picture. An anteater with a chainsaw, a cyclops with a hot iron, a ginger aviator with a pet banana slug and their midget friend. Damn, I've come full circle.

Not even I can clean up this mess.

Kroxquo Bonus:
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
Not unlike patrolling this shit storm of a bored

Mecca Bonus: #8, #9

5 Point Bonus: For one point each, name the five original MTV veejays.

Don't Give Up-Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush. It was such a simple video. Peter & Kate just held each other in a tight embrace while the camera s-l-o-w-l-y panned around them. But with its lyrics (he details all of the setbacks and miseries he's encountered in the verse, then in the chorus she sings "don't give up..you still have us, we don't need much of anything", and other words of love and support), it's a remarkably emotional and effective piece of work. Probably doesn't hurt that I've been in love with Kate Bush since I first saw her on SNL in'78...

Classic stuff, Vandal. I'll have to be honest here...I wasn't all that much of a rockstar...not too much debauchery on my resume. Although we DID trash a hotel room once...well, if you count accidentally breaking a beer bottle when it was tossed trashing a room. I don't even think anybody threw up. We were such good boys I'm surprised we didn't make the beds before we left.

"Billie Jean" - Michael Jackson

Image

"Sharp Dressed Man" - ZZ Top (The fact that the beardless member of the band has the last name Beard comes up at trivia events now and then.)

Image

"Mickey" - Toni Basil (Minnie Mouse also covered this song.)

Image

"You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" - Dead Or Alive

Image

"One Thing Leads To Another" - The Fixx (One of my favorite musical acts. I like this song, but prefer "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall")

Image

"Words" - Missing Persons (Always have to laugh when she sings the line "I think I'll die my hair blue." As if that would be more unusual than having white, pink, and blue hair. Also liked that the album title "Spring Session M" was an anagram of the band's name.)

Image

"Don't Come Around Here No More" - Tom Petty

Image

"Jeopardy" - Greg Kihn Band (Inspiration for Weird Al's "I Lost on Jeopardy!")

Image

"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" - The Eurythmics

Image

"Leave It" - Yes (This video was a big let down after the build up of how many versions of the video existed. They turned out to be all essentially the same video shot with slightly different camera effects.)

Image

"We're Not Gonna Take It" - Twisted Sister (This was a 50:50 shot for me. It may well turn out to be "I Wanna Rock".)

Image

"Close To The Edit" - Art of Noise (As we have discussed before, I loved this video.)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist from the 80's with a music video you like.

"Girls on Film" - Duran Duran, but I think it would also be interesting to see Evil Squirrel's version of "Land of Confusion" - Genesis

1 and 9

5 Point Bonus: For one point each, name the five original MTV veejays.

This question scored our trivia team some major points one night.

Martha Quinn (who is not one of the girls in the "Centerfold" video)
Nina Hartley (who once did a personal appearance in Louisville)
J.J. Jackson
Alan Hunter (who is one of the guy's in the "Fashion" video)
Mark Goodman

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson (Interesting how many people guessed a different Michael Jackson song... I think the theme behind this video may be even more famous than Thriller, and thought this would be a gimme...)

Image
Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top (With Krox's Groupies doubling as ZZ Top's Groupies...)

Image
Mickey - Toni Basil

Image
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) - Dead or Alive (Some of the guesses on this one were hilarious since if you didn't know what video was being referenced, you probably had no idea that was a dude...)

Image
One Thing Leads To Another - The Fixx (There were two things I always remember being fascinated with in this video watching it back in the day... the dobermans, and Cy Curnin's amazing opening and closing jacket...)

Image
Words - Missing Persons (All of the Tina Turner guesses were great! It does look a lot like her (If Tina were to wear blue and pink hair dye)! The first time I ever saw this video was when it was featured on Beavis & Butthead, and I thought maybe it was early Cyndi Lauper...)

Image
Don't Come Around Here No More - Tom Petty (I was surprised that this was one of the most identified videos in this game! It's not one of Petty's most popular songs of the decade, but obviously the video that left the biggest impression on the MTV generation...)

Image
Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band

Image
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Eurythmics

Image
Leave It - Yes (Amazing how we were so taken in by all of the visual effects in this video 30 years ago that would seem cheesy and boring nowadays...)

Image
I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister (We're Not Gonna Take It lives on as their signature song, but this was their best video, hands down...)

Image
Close To The Edit - The Art of Noise (A fittingly fucked up video by one of the strangest bands of the decade. I was pleasantly happy with how many got this one since it's really only known for its video...)

Mecca Bonus: Two of the songs above have been on the Mecca CD. Which numbers? (3 possible points)

#5 - One Thing Leads To Another (Current CD)
#9 - Sweet Dreams (Current CD)

Yes, there were no Mecca songs in this game when I first wrote it, but two of them popped up on this year's music...

5 Point Bonus: For one point each, name the five original MTV veejays.

Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, and Mark Goodman (Who in the early 90's was hosting the Illinois Lottery's weekly game show!)
