Lyrically Speaking - 2/20/14

by Roy Bunyan Cromer III
Friends, Romans, Bored Buddies! Lend me your ears, and a dollar. I'm quite happy for these chances to come out of the closet and host an LSWE game, since my Bored career has been about as spectacular as my baseball career was. I'm hosting this week's Theme Thursday game, which is yet another matching game! You can just cut the tension with a Ginsu knife... like at all those exciting games I played at an empty Busch Stadium in 1995....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme, 1 point for each correct match...

1. If you stretch my love till it's thin enough to tear
I'll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere

2. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race

3. Then He rolled his big sleeves up
And a brand-new world began
He created a woman and-a lots of lovin' for a man
Whoa-oh-oh, yes he did

4. Teardrops fell on mama's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said, we miss you, son
We love you, come on home

5. Guys grab a girl, don't wait make the twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor

6. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass
And I'm home bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way through the crowd

7. Don't call it a comeback
I been here for years
Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear

8. She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain

9. I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they're getting sweeter

10. LA's fine the sun shines most of the time
And the feeling is laid back
Palm trees grow and rents are low
But'cha know

11. The full moon is calling, the fever is high
And the wicked wind whispers and moans
You got your demons, you got your desires
Well, I got a few of my own

12. I heat up (I heat up)
Cool down (cool down)
When something gets In my way,
I go round it
Don't let life get me down
Gonna take it the way that I found it

Theme?

Matches?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another pair of songs with artists that would be a good match in today's game (An extra point if you can create the pair that isn't in this game)

1. If you stretch my love till it's thin enough to tear
I'll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere

Rubber ball, I come bouncing back to you. Unlike Buffalo Springfield yesterday, this is just a little TOO far back to remember the artist. Well, I guess it's the same -- I couldn't remember the name of the Buffalo Springfield song.

Early guess for a prescient point on the theme -- games played with a ball.

2. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race

Bzzt! No further enlightenment with regard to theme.

3. Then He rolled his big sleeves up
And a brand-new world began
He created a woman and-a lots of lovin' for a man
Whoa-oh-oh, yes he did

He took a hundred lbs. of clay. I'll guess Jimmy Dean, pretty sure that's not right.

Second guess on theme -- material that game balls are made from.

4. Teardrops fell on mama's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said, we miss you, son
We love you, come on home

Ugh, this is maddeningly familiar. I'll have to take a bzzt! and no further insight as to theme.

5. Guys grab a girl, don't wait make the twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor

Bzzt!

6. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass
And I'm home bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way through the crowd

Bzzt!

7. Don't call it a comeback
I been here for years
Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear

Bzzt!

8. She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain

50 ways to leave your lover, Paul Simon

9. I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they're getting sweeter

Mambo #5 -- Lou Vega. Bega. Bleep! Bega, final answer.

10. LA's fine the sun shines most of the time
And the feeling is laid back
Palm trees grow and rents are low
But'cha know

I am, I said, Neil Diamond

11. The full moon is calling, the fever is high
And the wicked wind whispers and moans
You got your demons, you got your desires
Well, I got a few of my own

One of these Nights, Eagles. I probably have the song name wrong again, but I'm sure of the band.

12. I heat up (I heat up)
Cool down (cool down)
When something gets In my way,
I go round it
Don't let life get me down
Gonna take it the way that I found it

Bzzt!

1. If you stretch my love till it's thin enough to tear
I'll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere
Rubber Ball - Bobby Vee (I had The Night Has a Thousand Eyes in this game as well until I realized my mistake when compiling it...)

2. Radio, video
Boogie with a suitcase
Your livin' in a disco
Forget about the rat race
Pop Muzik - M

3. Then He rolled his big sleeves up
And a brand-new world began
He created a woman and-a lots of lovin' for a man
Whoa-oh-oh, yes he did
A Hundred Pounds of Clay - Gene McDaniels

4. Teardrops fell on mama's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said, we miss you, son
We love you, come on home
Five Hundred Miles Away From Home - Many artists, but Bobby Bare had the hit...

5. Guys grab a girl, don't wait make the twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt to the dance floor
Gonna Make You Sweat - C&C Music Factory

6. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass
And I'm home bound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way through the crowd
A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton (A classic of old Mecca Radio...)

7. Don't call it a comeback
I been here for years
Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear
Mama Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J

8. She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon

9. I like Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita
And as I continue you know they're getting sweeter
Mambo #5 - Lou Bega

10. LA's fine the sun shines most of the time

Palm trees grow and rents are low

I Am, I Said - Neil Diamond

11. The full moon is calling, the fever is high

Well, I got a few of my own
One of These Nights - Eagles

12. I heat up (I heat up)
Cool down (cool down)
When something gets In my way,
I go round it
Don't let life get me down
Gonna take it the way that I found it
I Got The Music In Me - Kiki Dee

Theme? - Numbers and their corresponding Roman numerals (A few players noted that the numbers were exclusively in the titles, and the letters all in the artists except for one. This wasn't an oversight on my part, or a cop out, but just a complete coincidence I didn't realize until pointed out. I was just looking for the numbers and letters, and some were not too easy to find...)

Matches?

1-9 (5-V)
2-6 (1000-M)
3-5 (100-C)
4-12 (500-D)
7-8 (50-L)
10-11 (1-I)

I would have made this a 14 song game could I come up with a good song or artist with a lone X in it, but the only common X I could think of was the band XTC, which contains one of the other letters in the game, so I dismissed the idea...

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another pair of songs with artists that would be a good match in today's game (An extra point if you can create the pair that isn't in this game)

Though I neglected to mention it, a good pair was obviously worth four points, and a 10-X pair was worth 5...

5 Point Bonus: Where will next year's Super Bowl be held?

University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ (The stadium name, Glendale, Phoenix, even just plain Arizona was good enough for credit...)
