Cornell University does the Great Backyard Bird Count every year, and this year's starts today. The idea is to crowdsource the data -- recruit lots of amateurs to count birds, then use brute force statistical methods to get better conclusions. It'll only cost you 15 minutes of your time (not counting entering your data) each day that you choose to participate, up to a maximum of 4 days. Go to this site to start the process.
Ending my workday moratorium on showing up here for this interesting and important project. Hope to "see" some of you there!

Thanks for the plug. I'm a member of the Lab of Ornithology, although I haven't participated in one of these backyard counts.
While I haven't been actively looking for birds, today, I think my incidental count is zero.
