Iced in

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Wed Feb 12, 2014 8:23 am

The roads in my part of South Carolina are too icy for me to get to work.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Now no power. Gas fireplace and Coleman Lantern will keep me in good shape. I'll have crank up the generator when the batteries run down

Ouch. I see that 100,000 of our friends south of the border have lost power.

The curve of the storm track was from Georgia through SC and then curving up to Raleigh. We got lots of snow in Charlotte and plenty of ice, but not past the quarter-inch of ice they say is the threshold for power outages.

We are OK near downtown and so are Mom and Dad in northern Union County (the next one over). Their outdoor feral cats wonder why they are being punished with all this white stuff, but they have a doghouse with an electric blanket and electric water bowl so they are fine.

Glad y'all are OK, Skoop. SteelersFanSis in Virginia Beach is fine too.

Hope for the best for everybody in the storm's path.

One of our largest body wash production facilities has closed due to weather in NC. This is a plant that runs 24/7. I can't say how much we make there but I will be vague and say one line alone makes multiple thousands of bottles an hour. And we have more than one line running at any one time. To say they closed it for at least 2 days, probably 3 is a comment on how bad it is in NC. All personnel are safe at home. However since they have no schedules snow days, kids will be going to school on Saturdays for a bit.

To say we had a few phone calls this afternoon would also be an understatement.

Our offices will be closed tomorrow as well, which means 5 1/2 days closed in a three week period. It's snowing fairly heavily now but Atlanta missed the worst of the ice and we only had very scattered power failures here.

I had enough fun and games two weeks ago. I've been staying inside this time.

I'm scheduled to work tomorrow, but if I can't get out, I can work from home (assuming I can get the access thingy hooked up). But I'm thinking that by 2 pm I'll be able to drive three miles without much trouble.

Aside from the shame of having to admit to their friends that they live in a doghouse.

We lost power from 4:15 until 7:15 this morning. (The beeping from the battery back-ups woke me.)

My office is totally closed today. Two weeks ago they had just delayed openings.

My coworkers who come into the office yesterday had two-hour or longer drives home at noon yesterday. I knew better even though I live the closest to the office; the roads are hilly and twisty and don't get plowed until everything else has been.

Be safe out there! I'm working from home in snowy NJ- we probably have about 8 inches but otherwise, all is well. I'm hoping we don't lose power (there's a tree in front of the house that looks like it might take out the power line) but other than that, few complaints.

Yay for the fearless crews who work to restore power after storms. It's sweaty, mostly thankless and difficult, not to mention dangerous. If you know anyone who works one of these jobs, even if they're not currently (sic!) being called upon, please pass along my thanks.

I'm a little late getting to computer access, but hang in there ice-stormed BBs. Stay safe. And if possible, fed.

We got more like a slush storm here. And I wore the wrong boots for it, but that was my own bad.
