Lyrically Speaking - 2/10/14

#1 Post by Gimme A Squiggly » Mon Feb 10, 2014 7:51 am

Howdy, pardners! Welcome to another exciting edition of Mecca Monday! This week, we're gonna explore one of my favorite genres of music, and one which I love to add to the muzak CD's I play in my fine stores.... it's time for a little country! Yes, there's nothing I loved more back in the day than traveling from store to store in my pickup truck with Ol' Roy by my side listening to the old twangy country stations we have here in Arkansas. Of course, many of the Mecca country songs were released after I had already gone to that great big Opry in the sky, and as fair warning, one artist appears twice in this game. That's OK, I'm sure most of you rock and rollers won't do well on this game anyway. BWAHAHAHAHA... oh wait, excuse me...

Could we get customer assistance to the tobacco counter near the chaw...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Hello Samantha dear, I hope you're feelin' fine
And it won't be long until I'm with you all the time
But until then I'll spend my money up right down to my last dime

2. Now you can drag out the heartache
Baby you can make it quick
You can get it over with and let me move on
Don't concern yourself with this mess you left for me
I can clean it up you see
Just as long as your gone

3. Black top, blue skies big town full of little white lies,
Everybody's your friend, you can never be sure,
They'll promise fancy cars and diamond rings and all sorts of shiny things,
But girl you'll remember what your knees are for

4. Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
That water's right
And the weather's perfect
No telling what I might catch today

5. I've got some big news
The bank finally came through
And I'm holding the keys to
A brand new Chevrolet

6. Hands on the wheel, cruisin down the interstate
Gas pedal sticks, carries my car away
I was goin as fast as a Rambler does
I could feel the speed from my head to my toes

7. Winter sure was cold and miserable
Cooped up, shut down, baby it was pitiful
Anyhow, it`s over now
We owe to ourselves to have a little fun
The pace car`s pacin` now the green flag`s wavin`

8. Lazy yellow moon comin' up tonight,
Shinin' through the trees,
Crickets are singin' and lightnin' bugs
Are floatin' on the breeze
Baby get ready.

9. It's the Duquoin, Illinois county fair
I could still see her standing there like a dream
Flatbed stage on a little dirt track
She was second row, her hair pulled back
We were young and free

10. Back when I was gasoline
And this old tattoo had brand new ink
And we didn't care what your mom would think
About your name on my arm

11. She barely even knew his name,
But she liked the way he played the game.
Everybody cheered,
When he scored that last touchdown

12. I Been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours for what
Oh, tell me what I got

Like it needs it . . .
I thought this might propel me into 15th place, but I'm probably still doomed -- these aren't the same songs that were playing at the time I was hanging out at a seedy country-western bar with Diane, Greg, Sandy, Craig, and . . . good grief, I can't even remember their names. Oh well . . .

Gimme A Squiggly

While I am not a fan of country music at all, if ever there is proof that any song can grow on me if I hear it enough times, I find that I actually like most of the songs I used in this game. The Summer Mecca CD probably had more than its fair share of country, and without a doubt, it got a handful of the genre's hits it featured onto my favorites list...

1. Hello Samantha dear, I hope you're feelin' fine
And it won't be long until I'm with you all the time
But until then I'll spend my money up right down to my last dime
Calling Baton Rouge - Garth Brooks (This was in the final hour of the CD, which meant I often didn't get to hear it played... but I liked it just the same...)

2. Now you can drag out the heartache
Baby you can make it quick
You can get it over with and let me move on
Don't concern yourself with this mess you left for me
I can clean it up you see
Just as long as your gone
Leave the Pieces - The Wreckers (This was near the beginning of the CD, so I got to hear it quite often. This one definitely wormed its way into my heart, and I was even happier to discover that it was not the Dixie Chicks singing it..)

3. Black top, blue skies big town full of little white lies,
Everybody's your friend, you can never be sure,
They'll promise fancy cars and diamond rings and all sorts of shiny things,
But girl you'll remember what your knees are for
Baby Girl - Sugarland (I think I mentioned in last year's LSWE that Jennifer Nettles is one of those voices that should be jammed full of concrete for the sake of the non-deaf population. I can make an exception for Stuck Like Glue, because it's a fun song that overcomes Jennifer's ear-grating twang, but this song definitely doesn't get a pass as it annoyed the living shit out of me...)

4. Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
That water's right
And the weather's perfect
No telling what I might catch today
I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishing Song) - Brad Paisley (Always played as we came off of lunch... and no matter how many times I heard it, I still got a laugh out of the punch line chorus...)

5. I've got some big news
The bank finally came through
And I'm holding the keys to
A brand new Chevrolet
Mud on the Tires - Brad Paisley (Brad gets a rare double entry in this game due to the fact that I worried more about jamming songs into this game as opposed to who actually sang them...)

6. Hands on the wheel, cruisin down the interstate
Gas pedal sticks, carries my car away
I was goin as fast as a Rambler does
I could feel the speed from my head to my toes
How Forever Feels - Kenny Chesney

7. Winter sure was cold and miserable
Cooped up, shut down, baby it was pitiful
Anyhow, it`s over now
We owe to ourselves to have a little fun
The pace car`s pacin` now the green flag`s wavin`
Six Pack of Summer - Phil Vassar

8. Lazy yellow moon comin' up tonight,
Shinin' through the trees,
Crickets are singin' and lightnin' bugs
Are floatin' on the breeze
Baby get ready.
Fishing in the Dark - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Color me surprised that this song was both from the 80's, and by NGDB! I never knew anything they did other than their signature song "Mr. Bojangles"...)

9. It's the Duquoin, Illinois county fair
I could still see her standing there like a dream
Flatbed stage on a little dirt track
She was second row, her hair pulled back
We were young and free
Out of Summertime - Scott McCreery

10. Back when I was gasoline
And this old tattoo had brand new ink
And we didn't care what your mom would think
About your name on my arm
Springsteen - Eric Church (Nothing like having a country musician sing about a rock legend...)

11. She barely even knew his name,
But she liked the way he played the game.
Everybody cheered,
When he scored that last touchdown
Indian Summer - Brooks & Dunn ("Orange Crush" was the "time to bail out" song... this song preceded it and was like our two minute warning...)

12. I Been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours for what
Oh, tell me what I got
Footloose - Blake Shelton (Yes, you still got credit for Kenny Loggins... I threw this one in as a bone for everyone who I knew wouldn't do well on this game... but also included it because, as heretical as this may sound, I like the Shelton version better than the original!)

5 Point Bonus: The cable channel formerly known as The Nashville Network is now called what? - Spike TV (I was totally unaware TNN had resurfaced as a digital channel a couple years ago, and from what I can see on its Wiki page, it's only available in a limited number of markets. I was obviously going for the original cable channel TNN, which became the anti-Lifetime themed Spike back in 2000...)
