New Amsterdam - 3/24 episode

A pretty solid episode, which tied into Amsterdam's past experiences without resorting to some outlandish coincidence to let him solve the crime.
Spoiler
While it gives a good explanation for how he comes to share his story with Omar, the impact of that was lessened by the scene in episode 2--which I finally caught on Hulu this weekend--that revealed that he's already shared his secret with at least one other child of his, his prim and proper law firm secretary.

Now he's going to have a little trouble convincing the doctor that he's telling the truth about his history. Wanna bet she witnesses another miraculous healing next week?

Spoiler

I, too, really enjoyed how he told Omar.

And, like you, I figure something's up with the doctor because she asked for truth, he tries to give her the truth and she blows him off. It can't end like that, can it?

Of course, it won't end like that. His search for and courtship of The One is the central story arc they've got planned for this show.

Funny how that dream sequence showed his greatest wish: "Look, a gray hair!" :)

I'm still pulling for her to not be 'the one' at all, only he doesn't realize it for a while. Maybe the partner, maybe the sergeant. Only he doesn't realize it because of the proximity and the work setting.

That wouldn't fit with the heart attack on the subway platform. Not that that made any sense.

I too wondered about the partner and now about the sergeant, who seems to have come out of right field, and was clearly making "googly" eyes at him. We certainly have no proof the sergeant wasn't on the subway platform do we? Obviously if it were the partner it would seem likely to have made an impact before that, right?

I thought he did a miserable job of handling breaking the news to the girlfriend. I would have brought her back to his home and started showing her the pictures and artifacts that he has collected rather than just blurting it out as he did. And of course get Omar involved for back up. I guess that just made it more dramatic and they certainly needed to follow the staid old plot line of keeping tension in the relationship somehow. No doubt it will get resolved somehow. If the show lasts that long.

I still wonder if we will ever get to find out the answer or if they are just tossing off the episodes in the can. I have found enough about it to want to see it continue (which of course is usually the kiss of death) but still suspect that it won't be picked up. It apparently hasn't been getting big ratings although apparently it isn't a complete bust either.

I think the writers really are pacing this show like a mini-series, with a strong expectation that it won't be renewed. Compare how Lost drags out its mysteries, always adding more questions than it resolves. Here, they've explained who Omar is, filled in the essential backstory on what he knows about John, explained the AA history, and gone a long way in the relationship with the doctor.

Sure, if the show is renewed, they could keep on adding backstory to tie into the crime of the week. But if it's not, they could resolve the doctor's doubts, just as you suggested, in a single episode. And with that first gray hair she discovered on John's head, all we really need to know would be over.
