World Champions?

Why do we call the Super Bowl winner the "world champion"? Does anyone outside North America even play American football? This may be one reason the rest of the world hates us.

Well, if nobody else in the world plays the game, then they're world champions by default, right?

OTOH, there are baseball teams in other parts of the world, who never get a shot at the World Series.

Due to the money available, the best baseball players in the world almost all want to play here. Note, for instance, that the only MLB players who go to Japan are those who can no longer get major league jobs here. That's why it's fair to consider the team that wins MLB's World Series to truly be the best baseball team in the world. --Bob

We assume our teams are better, so we won't even give the other teams a chance?

Tsk!

Do they? Then what's all this fuss about immigration?

Don't confuse hate with jealousy.

:)

The vast majority of people in the middle east who hate us aren't jealous; it's a hate based on religious fervor and their view that we are meddling in their affairs.

Everyone in the Middle East hates The Patriots.

True fact.

Everyone outside of the Boston area hates them too.

The "world champions" thing is just ridiculous. I don't know why Super Bowl Champion or NBA Champion or MLB Champion isn't enough. I'm OK with "World Series" as a name for the finals but the winner is not "world champion". The only reason I can think of is so that it sounds better than "national champions" which is more of a college sports thing.
Notice that it is not common to refer to the NHL champs this way, they are the Stanley Cup winners, although some still do it.

Soccer fans never refer to a league championship this way. World Champions have to earn it by winning actual international tournaments.

How do you feel about "Miss Universe"?
