He had more Oscar-worthy performances in him. I'm so sorry to hear this bad news.

I appreciated him most in Capote and Doubt, but I've never seen him turn in anything other than perfection.
It's too bad that so many of our arts and sports performers feel such pressure that they can't handle it without help from strong drugs.

According to the USA Today, he was found with a syringe in his arm and had been through an unpublicized rehab in the spring.
What a horrible waste of talent and a sad end to a brilliant actor's career.

My favorite Hoffman performance. An overrated movie that was quite boring when he wasn't in a scene and absolutely mesmerizing when he was, even when he's spouting absolute nonsense (R-rated language in this clip):

I was just reading that there's an especially strong heroin going around that's causing O.D.s. Guess he got that.

A bizarre sidenote to this tragedy is that for the second time in three months, an actor's death is going to disrupt filming of a movie here in Atlanta (following Paul Walker's death while making the Fast and Furious film). Shooting was scheduled to resume this week on the Hunger Games sequel with Hoffman. Supposedly, most of his role has been filmed but he had several days of shooting left. No word on how that's going to be handled.

The producers said they will be able to complete the film without him.

What a tragic ending to a fine talent. I think I first remember him as the preacher in 'Cold Mountain' where he again gave a masterful performance.

Variety wrote:A search of the home of Philip Seymour Hoffman home turned up used syringes and approximately 50 bags of heroin, this according to law enforcement officials.
Police also found drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs. An autopsy is expected to be performed on Monday.
Wow, he was either dealing or hoarding it.

The author of the article linked above wrote:Detectives are using the stamps on the bags and checking with nearby jurisdictions to track the origins of the heroin. They are also trying to determine the purity of the heroin and whether there were any additives. They said that it does not appear that Hoffman had the heroin-fentanyl combination that has been linked to deaths throughout the Northeast.
The author of the article linked above wrote:Investigators are also looking into the possibility that Hoffman's May detox stint would have affected his tolerance for the drug.
This happens a lot. Addicts get cleaned up in rehab and then, when they back-slip, they use the same dosages as they did prior to rehab, but their tolerance is down.
Court documents show Philip Seymour Hoffman rejected his accountant's suggestion that he set aside money for his three children because he didn't want them to be "trust fund" kids.
The New York Post says the children's court-appointed lawyer recently interviewed the actor's accountant, David Friedman.
In a July 18 filing in Manhattan Surrogate Court, Friedman recalled conversations with Hoffman where the topic of a trust for his children was raised. He said Hoffman wanted his estimated $35 million fortune to go his longtime partner and the children's mother, Mimi O'Donnell.

I think his death said it all...."I'm a fucking moron!"
The proof continues to come in.

On a related note, Peaches Geldof apparently od'd on heroin, as well. I hadn't heard the official cod until today.

Yeah, that was a shocker.
Fun non-ironic but coincidental fact: She died on a Monday, a day her father sings he doesn't like.
