Lyrically Speaking - 1/31/14

#1 Post by Ear Licker » Fri Jan 31, 2014 5:32 am

It's time for everyone's favorite Free For All Friday LSWE game, the short phrases game!!!

Hey, quit booing, Search! You'll get your music video game soon enough....

Below are 20 very short clips from popular songs that are virtually unique (no, I didn't actually look that up this time) to that song in rock and roll history. Can you identify what songs these belong to by just a few words? You'll have the weekend to ponder these...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. Check with the sun

2. A love bipolar

3. Thirty-five sweet goodbyes

4. Sweet green icing

5. Moving sidewalks

6. Singing for Spuds

7. Maggot on your sleeve

8. Cup of laughter

9. First junk to Soho

10. Shania karaoke

15. The Tastee Freeze

16. Neon Broadway signs

17. Hurricane of frowns

18. Boy Mercury

19. Hip hop marmalade

20. My Les Paul's beat

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a short phrase that is virtually unique to that song, and give the short phrase for an extra point.

Mecca Bonus: Five of the songs above have been on one of the Mecca CD's. Which numbers? (15 possible points)

5 Point Bonus: Why did I use this particular Merry Man to host today's game?

Hey, quit booing, Search! You'll get your music video game soon enough....

Below are 20 very short clips from popular songs that are virtually unique (no, I didn't actually look that up this time) to that song in rock and roll history. Can you identify what songs these belong to by just a few words? You'll have the weekend to ponder these...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. Check with the sun

Stand -- REM

2. A love bipolar

3. Thirty-five sweet goodbyes

My Old School -- Steely Dan

4. Sweet green icing

Hah. Mondegreen for me, if I'm right. Always thought it was "sweet cream icing" Who the hell puts green icing on a cake? Macarthur Park -- Richard Harris

5. Moving sidewalks

Didn't come to me until I stumbled on the right tempo while singing it out loud. It would probably be really entertaining to film myself playing LS. I Can Dream About You -- Dan Hartman

6. Singing for Spuds

7. Maggot on your sleeve

8. Cup of laughter

9. First junk to Soho

No Myth -- Michael Penn

10. Shania karaoke

Before he Cheats -- Carrie Underwood

11. Triple X throwdown

Baby Got Back -- Sir Mix-a-Lot

12. Brother John Birch

Uneasy Rider -- Charlie Daniels

13. Dead poets and drum machines

14. Cold coffins hang

15. The Tastee Freeze

Jack and Diane -- John Mellencamp. BTW, in Indiana, it's spelled "Tastee-Freez." Marketing, y'know.

16. Neon Broadway signs

Runaway -- Bon Jovi

17. Hurricane of frowns

18. Boy Mercury

Roam -- B-52s

19. Hip hop marmalade

20. My Les Paul's beat

Once Bitten -- Great White

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a short phrase that is virtually unique to that song, and give the short phrase for an extra point. Near the end of "Catch all the Fish," Brad Paisley turns around the chorus, so it comes out "we drank all the fish, and we caught all the beer." I guess "drank all the fish" is short enough to qualify.

Mecca Bonus: Five of the songs above have been on one of the Mecca CD's. Which numbers? (15 possible points) #1, 4, 10, 14, 19

5 Point Bonus: Why did I use this particular Merry Man to host today's game? Yeah, no idea. Pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with Steve Brown's love life, though.

#8 - The Finer Things (Winter and Fall CD's)
#13 - These Words (Fall CD)
#15 - Jack and Diane (Fall CD)

#18 - Roam (Current CD)

5 Point Bonus: Why did I use this particular Merry Man to host today's game?

On January 31, 2001, Ace made one of his typical smartass comments that he took note of the contestant sitting in Seat 9, who was brightly lit up and visible (something that somehow got "fixed" when the shows went to reruns on GSN), over Regis' shoulder all night licking his ear. That contestant, of course, was me... and the ear licking story stuck with me for a long time.... though apparently it has gone by the wayside since nobody who played the game was able to make the connection that it had been the anniversary of my WWTBAM airdate. One person did know, but though she intended to play this game, apparently got distracted, forgot, or maybe both....
