Best commercial!!!

#1 Post by Lizbit » Thu Jan 30, 2014 11:16 am

Even though me and BeBe plan to watch mostly the Puppy Bowl, we'll be switching the channels back and forth to the Super Bowl. We think this is going to be the very best commercial:

I totally agree, Lizbit.

Two footers need to realize that puppies know best!

Yes! That was excellent. I thought I'd like to have five or six more little sisters and brothers, and I could teach them how to soldierdog. BeBe thought she would like to have 47 kitties to take naps with her.

My mom said she'd think about it.

Watched it twice. I expect ten or 'leven more times still to come.

It does not move the needle regarding the likelihood of me drinking a Bud. To show this just once during the Big Game costs $8 million. That's a lot of 6-packs.

Axe needs more puppies. On that whole page of kissy photos, I saw only one dog, and it was getting kissed, not kissing. I am available. I am an excellent kisser.

There weren't any dogs in the movie. What kind of movie is that?

P.S. Miss Christie -- I meant that to be constructive criticism for your advertising people. I just put the Axe message against the Ed Test, and I don't see how your company's promotions will spur The Confessor to drink a single six-pack of Axe.

It's rough out here in consumerland.

I like that one too, Christie.

You are right. I will talk to marketing about this mistake. Obviously there is much more room for puppies.

My Boonie has Axe.

Sometimes he smells like he drinks it but not most of the time.

Most of the time, he smells very nice. My Pretty Lady says he just puts a little behind his ears.

I cannot smell that. Pretty Lady can, because she is taller on two legs than I am.

I want one of those horsies as my new pet. With the squirrels. They can ride the horsie's back.

It is a very nice doggie. A very pretty doggie.

This is actually a most excellent point, and one I hadn't really considered. Budweiser has been doing commercials like this one every Super Bowl for the better part of a decade now, and other than the sweet, sappy puppy/horsie stories they convey, they have no actual advertising value to the product itself. The audience these ads resonate the most with is not one that is likely to be swayed to buy a Budweiser, and in fact, a lot of that target audience is forbidden by law to buy a Budweiser (I'm pretty sure Lizbit would need ES's fake Alaska ID)...

Which of course brings up another point about why Anheus... er, InBev hasn't been called on this yet. This ad appeals to kids a hell of a lot more than Joe Camel ever did, and he got raked across the desert coals by the anti-smoking nazis...

That isn't to remove the enjoyment the sentimental sorts get out of these yearly Budwesier Animal Planet productions, nor to say InBev can't spend its mountain of money however it wishes... just bringing up a few curious questions about these ads I have never seen raised before...

I just read my last post while noticing that it fits absolutely perfectly with my current avatar. Kool Aid drinking Pigladillo looks like the kind of critter who would absolutely love a commercial like this, while the Bud drinking Buster would rather see more half naked beer drinking chicks...

My brother ran the local Pepsi franchise for a while, and I think he would call the Budweiser ads "image advertising." Pepsi wanted an image that would appeal to teens and preteens (his son among them, at that time), and so they hired Michael Jackson for a zillion dollars. That didn't work out so hot when they set MJ on fire, but it was still a brilliant idea for a campaign.

With the proliferation of microbreweries that make really flavorful and top quality beers that aren't anything like having sex in a canoe, mass produced brews like Budweiser have lost a lot of market share. So Budweiser took one of the most recognizable and adored images in the country, the Budweiser Clydesdales, and starting making commercials that made them even more endearing to Americans of all ages. They're not worried about me or SteelersFan; there's not much chance of changing our minds about our choice of beverage. But the kids -- if they can plant that delightful connection in young brains between the Clydesdales and the odd rancher or puppy, and if they have made a solid connection between the Clydesdales and the Budweiser label, which I believe they have, well then, when that kid is in his twenties and wants to have a couple beers while he's watching a game at a sports bar, or picks up a six pack to take over to his buddy's house, etc. etc., almost without thinking about it, that delightful connection will make him choose Budweiser. This was a long-term strategy, and I give Budweiser the highest plaudits for it. I hate Super Bowl commercials which show stunts that could kill a person if they weren't stunts, and I feel duped into watching violence that I would otherwise turn away from. Not so with Budweiser.

And that, I believe, is why Budweiser makes commercials aimed at kids nowhere near enough old to buy a six pack. When they are old enough, Budweiser will be in the mix somewhere.

Another piece of it is the coverage they get. I have now watched that commercial about a dozen times, and the dozenth time, it was forwarded to me by my Monday bridge partner, who forwarded it to all her bridge pals -- about 20 people. That little exercise is being repeated all over the country. Budweiser didn't pay $8 million for 60 seconds. That $8 million paid for hundreds of thousands of hours, and I say, good job and thanks, Budweiser.

I wouldn't be able to watch it even a second time unless it was on mute. That God forsaken song is on the Mecca CD, and it's nails on the chalkboard to me....

I've watched it several times at work with no sound. It's better.
