ANSWERS/POINTS LS SURPRISE TUESDAY March 25

#1 Post by fantine33 » Mon Mar 24, 2008 10:03 pm

Well, the first SURPRISE! is that it isn't Tuesday yet. But since I'm not sure that I'll be able to get online tomorrow morning to post, I'm doing it early rather than late.

The second SURPRISE! is that we are now back to the future and this is 2008! On one of the Tuesday games all I had was the list of songs. No lyrics, no bonuses, no nothing. After considering that the surprise was that they were all songs written by Shel Silverstein, I decided nobody would probably cry a lot about missing that one. Cause you either know Shel songs, or you don't.

So, I had to write a new game, yay! Since the rest of the month are all songs at least 6 years old (and mostly older), I decided to make this one a little more current.

So, without further ado, here are ten of my favourite songs from the last couple years. Since it's still early in the year, I'm counting 2006 in there. So I don't think there's anything in here older than that, but don't hold me to it.

If you're still reading (I know you're not) I also got carried away on the bonuses. The first two are so tough I gave you an artist, but even if you're clueless on those, you still have a good shot at the last two.

1. I want to make you move
Because you’re standing still
If your body matches
What your eyes can do
You’ll probably move right through
Me on my way to you

2. They say the devil's water it ain't so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

3. It starts out easy, something simple, something sleazy
Something inching past the edge in reserve
Now through the lines of the cheap Venetian blinds
Your car is pulling off of the curb

4. Heard they'd do anything for a Klondike
Well I'd do anything for a blonde dyke
And she'll do anything for the limelight
And we'll do anything when the time's right

5. I dug up this old photograph
Look at all that hair we had
It's bittersweet to hear you laugh
Your phone is ringing I don't want to ask

6. Oh baby when you talk like that
You make a woman go mad
So be wise and keep on
Reading the signs of my body

7. East or west coast, it don't matter
Down south or up north, it don't matter
Hollywood or in the hood, it don't matter
Either way it's all good, it don't matter

8. I've kissed your lips and held your head
Shared your dreams and shared your bed
I know you well, I know your smell
I've been addicted to you

9. I ain't never seen nothing that'll make me go
This crazy all night spending my dough
Had a million dollar vibe and a bottle to go
Them birthday cakes they stole the show

10. Chitty chitty baby
When your nose is in the nitty gritty
Life could be a little sweet
But life could be a little shitty

Bonus Instrumental: In July of 1968, instrumentals were #1 and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The number one song by Hugh Masekela was also a top ten hit the next year with lyrics added. What’s the song and who is the group that had the hit with words?

Bonus Bonus: The #2 song was by Cliff Nobles and Co (although he obviously didn’t sing on it). What was the name of this one?

Super Bonus: The group that played the horns on that #2 song later formed the group known as MFSB. What did that acronym mean?

What? Another Bonus? Bonus: MFSB’s biggest (and only, as far as I know) was also an instrumental, called TSOP. So what did THOSE initials mean?

Uh, oh - as I keep saying, my musical tastes fossilized in the early 70s so I'm probably in big trouble today.

I know the song, I have no idea what it's called. I think it's by Finger Eleven. Anyway, I do like it...

This isn't Nickelback's Photograph, is it? It fits into the lyric scheme of the song, but it doesn't really look familiar, plus it has the magic word in there...

6. Oh baby when you talk like that
You make a woman go mad
So be wise and keep on
Reading the signs of my body
Something by Shakira

7. East or west coast, it don't matter

Either way it's all good, it don't matter

8. I've kissed your lips and held your head

What’s the song and who is the group that had the hit with words? Grazing in the Grass. No idea who had the lyric hit, but I always wondered if those two songs were connected....

Bonus Bonus: The #2 song was by Cliff Nobles and Co (although he obviously didn’t sing on it). What was the name of this one? - Classical Gas?

Super Bonus: The group that played the horns on that #2 song later formed the group known as MFSB. What did that acronym mean? - Mother Fucking Son of a Bitch!

What? Another Bonus? Bonus: MFSB’s biggest (and only, as far as I know) was also an instrumental, called TSOP. So what did THOSE initials mean? - I'll just pass on this one before I come up with something even worse....

Well, I haven't listened to any current music in the last 6 years (at least not enough to know the lyrics) so I don't know any of these songs but I'll give the boni a shot since that's more in the my era.

B.I. Grazing in the Grass was the song and the one hit wonder was by a group called Friends of Distinction.

B.B. I believe that was called The Horse

Take me back to 1968, please...
Spoiler
Grazing in the Grass

Redone as a fifth-dimension-esque vocal by Friends of Distinction

The Horse, by Cliff Noble and Company.

This is a very peculiar track, with sections several bars long which sound like a mere accompanying track. And this is because it was an accompanying track, originally. I dont remember the rest of the story, except that whoever was supposed to sing was not Cliff Noble.

And of course the horns were dynamite. MFSB officially is Mother Father Sister Brother. TSOP was The Sound of Philadelphia.

Beast should get half points.

Other version of MFSB is

Motherf*****in Soul Baand

Which they were. fer sure, in the early seventies

But in 1968 even trading away a future US Senator couldn't make the Philadelphia Phillies a good baseball team, and the NL was won by the Cardinals featuring a future announcer at the ketcher spot.

In an interview in the Philadelphia Daily News before their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Gamble & Huff were joking about this.

It did NOT stand of Motha F**kin' Soul Brother. It was really, MOTHER, FATHER, SISTER, BROTHER

What? Another Bonus? Bonus: MFSB’s biggest (and only, as far as I know) was also an instrumental, called TSOP. So what did THOSE initials mean?

Spoiler
Checking In

Bonus Instrumental: In July of 1968, instrumentals were #1 and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The number one song by Hugh Masekela was also a top ten hit the next year with lyrics added. What’s the song and who is the group that had the hit with words?

Unchained Melody? - Righteous Brothers

Bonus Bonus: The #2 song was by Cliff Nobles and Co (although he obviously didn’t sing on it). What was the name of this one?

No need to spoilerize this one -- not that there ever is for me, except maybe on CW day.

I'm ready for my piddly, pathetic one participation point please.

And maybe one pathetic bonus point for a little alliteration? (Ingratiating smile...)

I thought there might be some carnage, but I didn't know that NOBODY listens to current music, with the exception of nelly and astro, who both got a few, and tlitf, who apparently only like current bands that suck and therefore do not perform any of my favourite songs.

I even tried to stay with hits. A couple wags (astro and ed) here that were on my list but didn't make the final cut were Hey There Delilah and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley (it's impossible to get two consecutive lines that don't have crazy in it). I also took mercy on people and dropped Sexyback (yes, really!) and London Bridge.

1. I want to make you move
Because you’re standing still
If your body matches
What your eyes can do
You’ll probably move right through
Me on my way to you

PARALYZER - FINGER ELEVEN

2. They say the devil's water it ain't so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG - THE KILLERS

I love this video, it took me forever to realize that it was reverse.

3. It starts out easy, something simple, something sleazy
Something inching past the edge in reserve
Now through the lines of the cheap Venetian blinds
Your car is pulling off of the curb

HERE IT GOES AGAIN - OK GO

This was ubiquitous for a long time, wasn't it? I guess everybody was too busy trying to memorize the treadmill routine instead of listening to the words. Ha!

4. Heard they'd do anything for a Klondike
Well I'd do anything for a blonde dyke
And she'll do anything for the limelight
And we'll do anything when the time's right

STRONGER - KANYE WEST

Hate Kanye, love this song. And Marley gets his first humour points of the month!

5. I dug up this old photograph
Look at all that hair we had
It's bittersweet to hear you laugh
Your phone is ringing I don't want to ask

(DO YOU WANT TO) MAKE A MEMORY - BON JOVI

lb, I would have definitely done Rock Star because I love it so much but I couldn't remember if you did it last month or I just mentioned it and you responded. Was Photograph a hit? I only know it from being on the cd.

6. Oh baby when you talk like that
You make a woman go mad
So be wise and keep on
Reading the signs of my body

HIPS DON'T LIE - SHAKIRA f. WYCLEF

Full points for just Shakira

7. East or west coast, it don't matter
Down south or up north, it don't matter
Hollywood or in the hood, it don't matter
Either way it's all good, it don't matter

AIN'T NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT - ROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE FAMILY BAND

No Randolph fans? I love love that man, he does crazy things with a pedal steel that Buddy Emmons never even dreamed about. Plus, he kind of looks like Carmelo. (If you have to ask "Carmelo Who?" you obviously haven't been paying attention. Ha!)

8. I've kissed your lips and held your head
Shared your dreams and shared your bed
I know you well, I know your smell
I've been addicted to you

GOODBYE MY LOVER - JAMES BLUNT

It's sappy and it's corny and I love it.

9. I ain't never seen nothing that'll make me go
This crazy all night spending my dough
Had a million dollar vibe and a bottle to go
Them birthday cakes they stole the show

LOW - FLO RIDA and T-PAIN

Nelly's the only one who knows the joys of "then shorty got lowlowlowlowlowlowlow"? Listen to it once and try to get it out of your head.

10. Chitty chitty baby
When your nose is in the nitty gritty
Life could be a little sweet
But life could be a little shitty

TELL ME BABY - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

Nelly gets half credit because that was funny and he knows I'm a sucker for Kitty Sandwich.

GRAZIN' IN THE GRASS - FRIENDS OF DISTINCTION

THE HORSE

MOTHER FATHER SISTER BROTHER

I had already decided beforehand that anybody with the cubes to answer Mother Fucking Son of a Bitch would get full points. Congrats, lb!
