Lyrically Speaking -1/17/14

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 17, 2014 7:30 am

Who says a song needs to be a chart success to be memorable? And come to think of it, when a song brags about being a Top 40 hit, what does that really mean anyway? Free For All Friday is about to find out...

All 12 songs below were Top 40 hits in the most liberal sense of the phrase. Each of these songs peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100, meaning that Casey Kasum barely got to spin the song once before it was never to be played on his countdown show again. However, most of them are better known today than a whole slew of Top 10 songs that time forgot...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I'm not the kind of man
Who tends to socialize
I seem to lean on
Old familiar ways
And I aint no fool for love songs
That whisper in my ears

2. It ain't the way you move
It ain't the way that you move me
Oh no
It ain't the way you shake
It ain't the way that you shake me
Oh no

3. And nobody knows him,
And nobody cares,
'Cos there's no hiding place,
There's no hiding place - for you

4. It's alright if you love me,
It's alright if you don't
I'm not afraid of you runnin' away honey,
I've got this feeling you won't

5. She'll make you take her to the club, but then she leaves with her friends
She likes to stay late at the party, 'cause the fun never ends
And all her clothes are on the floor and all your records are scratched
She's like a one-way ticket 'cause you can't come back!

6. "Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck

7. When I was high in the sky
I would imagine us dancin'
You'd say let's go home
That's the time I start romancin'

8. Time is the essence
Time is the season
Time ain't no reason
Got no time to slow

9. Don't surround yourself with yourself,
Move on back two squares,
Send an Instant Karma to me,
Initial it with loving care

10. Everywhere is
Freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies
Tell me where is sanity

11. Turn it on
Turn it up
Turn it loud
All the way

12. I see ya' little speed boat head up our coast
She really want to skip town
Get back scruffy, back scruffy,
Get back u flea infested mongrel

Kroxquo Bonus: It would be unfair to ask you for another song with artist that peaked at #40 on the Hot 100, so instead, give another song with artist that is still popular today despite having little or no Billboard chart success at the time it was released.

Mecca Bonus: One of these songs was on the Mecca CD. Which number is it? (One possible point)

5 Point Bonus: Which song from the Mecca Radio 70's game (yes, you get to look at the game answers... just click here) only peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100?

Wow, I wouldn't think any of those didn't make the top 25 (except #12 which neither you nor I ever heard of).
I'll go with Video Killed the Radio Star because it is the worst of the bunch and likely didn't get much radio play, only MTV.

Yay for MLK!

Still Crazy After All These Years -- Paul Simon

2. It ain't the way you move
It ain't the way that you move me
Oh no
It ain't the way you shake
It ain't the way that you shake me
Oh no

3. And nobody knows him,
And nobody cares,
'Cos there's no hiding place,
There's no hiding place - for you

4. It's alright if you love me,
It's alright if you don't
I'm not afraid of you runnin' away honey,
I've got this feeling you won't

Breakdown -- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

5. She'll make you take her to the club, but then she leaves with her friends
She likes to stay late at the party, 'cause the fun never ends
And all her clothes are on the floor and all your records are scratched
She's like a one-way ticket 'cause you can't come back!

6. "Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck

7. When I was high in the sky
I would imagine us dancin'
You'd say let's go home
That's the time I start romancin'

8. Time is the essence
Time is the season
Time ain't no reason
Got no time to slow

Burnin' for You -- Blue Oyster Cult

9. Don't surround yourself with yourself,
Move on back two squares,
Send an Instant Karma to me,
Initial it with loving care

10. Everywhere is
Freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies
Tell me where is sanity

11. Turn it on
Turn it up
Turn it loud
All the way

12. I see ya' little speed boat head up our coast
She really want to skip town
Get back scruffy, back scruffy,
Get back u flea infested mongrel

Who Let the Dogs Out -- Baha Men

Kroxquo Bonus: It would be unfair to ask you for another song with artist that peaked at #40 on the Hot 100, so instead, give another song with artist that is still popular today despite having little or no Billboard chart success at the time it was released. Stairway to Heaven -- Led Zeppelin

Mecca Bonus: One of these songs was on the Mecca CD. Which number is it? (One possible point) #1 Paul Simon

5 Point Bonus: Which song from the Mecca Radio 70's game (yes, you get to look at the game answers... just click here) only peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100?

I'll guess Video Killed the Radio Star

Kroxquo Bonus: It would be unfair to ask you for another song with artist that peaked at #40 on the Hot 100, so instead, give another song with artist that is still popular today despite having little or no Billboard chart success at the time it was released.

I didn't go so far as to actually look up the chart positions of the Kroxed songs, but there were two I knew I couldn't accept... "My Sharona" not only hit #1, but was the #1 song of 1979... and "Come On Eileen" was also a #1 hit in 1982...

Mecca Bonus: One of these songs was on the Mecca CD. Which number is it? (One possible point) - #5 - She's So Mean, which was on the first Mecca CD last winter, and as TBone mentioned, was one of many Mecca CD songs that was also on one of his previous Boneys lists....

5 Point Bonus: Which song from the Mecca Radio 70's game (yes, you get to look at the game answers... just click here) only peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100? - Video Killed the Radio Star (I had it in this game until I realized I had already used it in the opening Mecca Monday game... so it became the Bonus Question instead...)

JJC Points:

mntetn gets a JJC point for more of the Kroger CD...

frank gets a JJC point for stealing Ebeneezer Beast's avatar...

Marley gets a JJC point for forgetting that when he wants to just take a "Present", he needs to just take a "Present"....

Krox gets a JJC point for Paul Simon in a turkey costume...

BiT gets 2 JJC points for Pat Boone...

elwood gets a supermax for the perfect use of the squirrel drinking beer GIF. That still had me chuckling long after I'd read his answers...

Saucy gets no JJC points, but a one-time warning that to get attendance credit, one must do something other than just show up. DK can give you some pointers on how to handle games that are complete shutouts...

TBone gets 2 JJC points for Betty White and The New Chris Christie Minstrels (With all of the CC jokes being used in LSWE, I really need to check out that story and see what's going on there....)

Esto gets 3 JJC points for the real meaning behind I'd Love To Change the World...

Jessie gets 2 JJC points for all work and no play...
