Another win, nearly 2 months later. At least partial credit should go to the bored, because I don't think I'd have known the last question answer otherwise, and I don't think anyone else on our team knew it either.
Rounds 1-3 there are 3 questions each, you have a 5-point question, a 3-point question, and a 1-point question. You decide the point value of each question based on your confidence (and which point values you haven't used yet).
Halftime question is 4 parts, with each part being 2pts each.
Rounds 4-6 are similar to 1-3, except point values are 2, 4, and 6.
Final question you can wager up to 15 points of your total.
Round 1:
1. Candy: What candy bar used to use the slogan, "Nobody better lay a finger on my..."?
Butterfinger - we did 5 pts
2. Transportation: The "Peace Bridge" connects which 2 countries?
USA & Canada. I came up with the answer immediately, but then almost talked myself out of it, we went with just 1 point.
3. 90s Movies: Which series of movies featured a villain named Dr. Evil?
Austin Powers - we got 3 points
Break for team cheers. Our team, Spoiler Alert!, went with "Your kids are not going to sleep on time tonight." Highlight was team You Can't Spell Happiness. Their cheer is usually "Without Penis!", but this week they changed it to "Because there's a bunch of kids sitting at the next table!" Which there were.
Round 2:
1. Tri-Bond: What word goes with Field Marshall Rommel, [maybe a ski equipment company?], and a conservative news network?
Fox - 3pts, since it was announced the "free answer" would be in this round
2. Internet/Tech: With what "freemium" VOIP service did Microsoft replace Windows Live Messenger?
Skype. We made a 1-point guess at Outlook Messenger
3. (Free Answer) Geography: What country's capital translates into English roughly as "Smoke Cove"?
Iceland. Having the answer already, I had expected the question to be something about the Althing or world's oldest government (5 pts)
Round 3:
1. The Calendar: Which month recently surpassed June as the most popular month for USA weddings—April, May, or August?
August. We couldn't decide between that and May. Put both answers in a hat, pulled and submitted one, and didn't look to see which one was left until the correct answer was revealed. We guessed May for 1pt
2. Science! There are several Great Black Spots on Neptune. They are quite similar to the Great Red Spot on which planet?
Jupiter - 5pts
3. Snakes: What group of snakes is distinguished by red, yellow, and black stripes?
Coral - 3pts
Halftime:
Sports: For 2 points each, name any 4 of the 8 players who were 2013 finalists for the NFL Hall of Fame, but not inducted:
Michael Strahan, Andre Reed, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Will Shields, Charles Haley, Kevin Greene, Aeneas Williams
We guessed Chris Carter, Tim Brown, Ray Guy, and Thurman Thomas. We misheard the question as being a 2014 question instead of 2013. On the other hand, none of our guesses except Tim Brown would have been right anyway, so it doesn't really matter.
When the scores were announced, we had 27 points out of a possible 35. We were in 9th place out of 23 teams, the leaders had 31. Nobody got more than 6 on the halftime question.
Round 4:
1. Business & Advertising: Which brand uses a photo of an elderly African American man wearing a bow tie?
Uncle Ben's - 6pts
2. Music: On December 4, 1956 at Sun Studios, an impromptu jam session occurred with four musicians. This was later referred to as the Million Dollar Quartet. Name any two of the musicians.
Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins. We wrote down Cash and Perkins before they got the "any two" part. 4pts
3. Roman Mythology: What was the name of the king of the gods, who was also the god of sky and thunder?
Jupiter (they love callbacks) - 2pts
(The dreaded) Round 5:
1. Health and drugs: What is the name of the condition where an organ breaks/protrudes through the wall of the cavity that is supposed to contain it?
Hernia - 6pts. Unfortunately 2 team members had firsthand knowledge of this.
2. Sports: What is the most recent team to win three consecutive World Series championships?
Yankees - 4pts
3. Comic Strips: Darby Conley is best known as the author of which daily comic strip?
Get Fuzzy - 2pts
Round 6:
1. Comedies: Which 2010 comedy featured as characters Adam Yates, Father Time, and Nick Webber?
Hot Tub Time Machine - WAG got us 2pts
2. Military/War: The National Liberation Front of South Vietnam was more popularly known in this country as what?
Vietcong - 6pts
3. Peppers: The chipotle (I assume, anyway. The emcee kept pronouncing it "chipolte".) is a dried brown form of what kind of pepper?
Jalapeño - 4pts
So we swept the second half, which we'd never done before. Going into final question, we were in first place with 63 pts. There were teams with 62, 61, 60, and 59, though.
Final Question:
Television: Name the character that was elderly, hard of hearing, and misinformed who appeared on Weekend Update in the early years of Saturday Night Live. Emcee added the hint that she was played by Gilda Radner, which we did not need.
Emily Litella. Apparently most of the teams said Roseanne Rosannadanna. I had to talk my team out of that. We won by 5.
