Don't Text in Movie Theaters

A man in suburban Tampa, FL was shot and killed in a movie theater by a patron in the row behind him who took exception to the victim's texting during previews of a showing of Lone Survivor over the weekend. An argument ensued and the suspect shot both the man, who died, and his companion, who is expected to survive. A Good Samaritan managed to subdue the gunman until police arrived.

This would make a much more effective promo than those namby pamby ones they show in theaters currently.

I've always felt that checking phones/texting during the previews was a grey area.

It happened this afternoon, not over the weekend. And the killer was a retired cop.

My sister, cousin & I were in a theater before New Years to see "20 Feet From Stardom" (finally!). The theater played a commerical or 2, not previews. We talked during them.

They were the same commercials you see on TV for whatever car brand is doing the "isn't it great we don't have to choose blank or blunk". This particular one I've actually never seen on TV, probably because its not so PC (though when I told this story to my brother he says he has seen this one on TV); the car-buying couple are saying "isn't it great we don't have to choose large or in-charge" & the illustration is someone who is of normal proportions but has been tele-shrunk to a very small size lecturing a group around a table "it's my way, my way or my way".

Someone turned around & very irritatedly shooshed us. We yelled back at them "its a commercial!".

We weren't shot. I suppose we should be glad.

Great movie.

This reminds me of a Harlan Ellison essay in which he describes witnessing a similar incident. Only in that one, the killer didn't use a gun. He just threw the offender off the theater balcony, snapping his spine when he landed on the seats below. --Bob

I know I'm old enough to remember theater balconies when I was younger.

Sadly, I'm also old enough to remember why they were there.
