about the Golden Globe Awards.

For years, I hadn't taken him seriously because he believes that they aren't a credible awards ceremony. Last night proved that he was right. I sincerely apologize for discrediting him about the Golden Globes.

SSS says they're not credible because Pia Zadora has a Golden Globe. I now say they're not credible because "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" has a Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy and Andy Samberg has a Golden Globe for Best Lead Actor in a TV Comedy. I've heard of the Hollywood Foreign Press stretching the definition of "comedy"--see "The Tourist" for example--but this is ridiculous. This travesty does, however, help to explain why France thinks that Jerry Lewis is the funniest person who has ever lived.

The "Hollywood Foreign Press Association" is a loose knit group of about 100 people, many of whom don't do much reporting on a regular basis. As such, they are very approachable by studios looking to push a particular movie or TV show. There's probably no outright bribery, but a lot of brownnosing and schmoozing.

The same thing goes on to a lesser extent at the Oscars and Emmies, but you have to influence a lot more people there to be a winner.
