The first crossword puzzle appeared in the New York Sunday WOrld 100 years ago today, constructed by Arthur Wynne.

Google is commemorating this with a doodle that's a crossword you can fill-in.

The New York Times 100th anniversary themed puzzle was co-written by Todd Gross, who is the brother of Jeff Gross (the only person to ever be a contestant on both US and UK WWTBAM).
Getting any puzzle published in the NY Times is quite an accomplishment, so being selected for the 100th anniversary puzzle is quite an honor.
