RIP Eleanor Parker

Odd coincidence that with the recent attention being paid to The Sound of Music, one of its cast members dies today. Parker played the baroness who vied for Christopher Plummer's affections in the film. Ironically, that was her last major role. She was also a major leading lady in the 40s and 50s getting three Oscar nominations along the way. Among her better known roles were Detective Story (one of her Oscar nominations) and The Man with the Golden Arm.
Age 91.

Except for Shirley Temple, Eleanor Parker was the first actress I was aware of. Star of Caged.
My mom would leave the six older of us kids unattended and watching TV while she made dinner and attended to the little kids. She probably thought we were watching Mickey Mouse and cartoons, but our favorite was Million Dollar Movie, which showed the same movie every night for a week and multiple times on the weekend. She started paying more attention when we started reenacting the fork stabbing scene from Caged at the table. Good times.

I thought she did a great job in The Sound of Music, and I've been a fan ever since. My favorite is her portrayal of Marjorie Lawrence in Interrupted Melody.
