In the first major critic awards for this year, the New York Film critics named David O. Russell's American Hustle best film of the year (and also Best Screenplay) and co-star Jennifer Lawrence Best Supporting Actress. The film, based on actual FBI sting in the 1970s, features Christian Bale and Amy Adams as con artists recruited by FBI Agent Bradley Cooper to bring down crooked politicians. Russell directed Cooper and Lawrence in last year's Silver Linings Playbook.

Steve McQueen was named best director for 12 Years a Slave. Robert Redford (All is Lost) was named Best Actor; Cate Blanchett (Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine) was named Best Actress; and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) Best Supporting Actor.

Since most Golden Globe, Academy, and guild voters are on the west coast, you can expect they'll come up with totally different awardees.

American Hustle must have had a special screening for the NY critics as it doesn't officialy open until 13 December and that's a limited opening to qualify for the Academy Awards.

It will open in Durham at the Carolina Theatre as part of a limited release on Dec. 10.

They're going to start getting one of these a month, a few weeks before the nationwide openings.

This year, Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street was removed from the year end schedule in the fall and only put back recently. They had to really hustle to schedule screenings for the critics. Next Tuesday? No one's updated the IMDb calendar yet. It sounds exactly like my type of film so I'll have to see it in Durham. Thanks for the heads up.

American Hustle is currently scheduled to open at various art theaters on December 13 and then open wide on December 20.

Apparently, there was a good bit of confusion about the Boston Film Critics Awards over the weekend. The Wolf of Wall Street was only finalized about a week ago, and the producers were only able to schedule one single screening for Boston critics at the last minute, which some of them missed. Wolf finished second in several categories including Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay (12 Years a Slave was the big winner there). It's likely that Wolf may lose out on some of these other awards as a result as well.

The deadline for nominations for Screen Actors Guild voting is today, and this may bode poorly for Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, who are expected to contend in the acting categories. Assuming they do at least get nominated, voters would be able to take a second look before voting for the actual winners to be announced in January.
