CSLS 11/18/13 - Marley Music - Take Two!

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Mon Nov 18, 2013 6:53 am

I asked ShamelessWeasel if I could post and then grade my own CSLS, so here goes. This intro is basically a repeat of the one I used in my last guest LS game, four years ago. The songs are all new, although some may be very, very old! ;)

You may have noticed that I'm usually fighting for the cellar in most LS games, so the theme of today's LS is simple:

What in the world does Marley listen to?

Ten songs; one point each for title and artist. Many of these are traditional songs that have been around much longer than most of the other songs you've encountered while playing LS. Any cover of the song is good for a point.

Some of the songs have a hint/bonus question associated with them. Each bonus question is worth another point.

An answer of "Present" will be worth 1 point. By so answering, you are stating that you have read the entire game, given it your best effort, and come up with nothing.

1. Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Early in the morning

2. When I think of all the worries
People seem to find
And how they're in a hurry
To complicate their mind
By chasing after money
And dreams that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different
We've better things to do.

3. Tell her to buy me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true lover of mine

4. The following song doesn't have "lyrics" per se, because it's sung in the vocalize-style with made-up phonetic syllables invented by the composer, Karl Jenkins. This particular piece has the same name for the song and the performing group, and begins thusly.

A-ri-a-di-e-mus la-te
A-ri-a-di-e-mus da
A-ri-a-di-na-tus la-ta a-du-a
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te la-te-a

Hint/Bonus Question: What airline used this song in a 1994 commercial and in their preflight video?

5. Off the Florida Keys
There's a place called [Title]
That's where you wanna go
To get away from it all

6. [Title], [Title with a pronoun change]
From the California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters

7. Oh, father why are you so sad
On this bright Easter morn
When Irish men are proud and glad
Of the land where they were born?
Oh, son, I see in mem'ries view
A far-off distant day
When, being just a lad like you
I joined the IRA.

The fine print: An answer of "Present" must be given using the phrase "Present, virtually." Failure to give the answer in this exact form will be evidence that your statement of having read the entire game is false; therefore the 1 point bonus offer will be void. However, answering "Present, virtually" will be worth 2 bonus points to EVERYONE who so answers, regardless of whether you have additional answers in the game or not.

8. [Title]
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive me

Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

Hint/Bonus Question: What automobile company used this song in a commercial featuring a hockey mom driving around some hockey-playing kids?

9. I love digging in the dirt
With just a pick and brush
Finding fossils is my aim
So I'm never in a rush
'Cause the treasures that I seek
Are rare and ancient things
Like Velociraptor's jaw
Or Archaeopteryx's wings
Now all the kids who wanna see'em
Are lining up at our museum

[Title, four words, declarative sentence]
That's who I am
That's who I am
That's who I am

10. I've had a life that's full
Everyone's been good to me
So fire up that fiddle, boy
And give me [title].
When the sun comes up
I will leave without a fight
The world is mine tonight.

Hint/Bonus Question: What "One Degree of WWTBAM" morning show featured this band playing this song a few years ago, just before St. Patrick's Day?

It's very weird that the first two people who answered today's game identified the exact same songs, and no others!

What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?-The Irish Rovers must've done this at SOME point....my stepson used to sing this one all the time around the house, pronouncing "early" in the traditional "ER-lie" manner, of course...

Drunken Sailor - Great Big Sea

2. When I think of all the worries
People seem to find
And how they're in a hurry
To complicate their mind
By chasing after money
And dreams that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different
We've better things to do.

Let's Live for Today - The Grass Roots

3. Tell her to buy me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true lover of mine

Scarborough Fair - Simon and Garfunkel

4. The following song doesn't have "lyrics" per se, because it's sung in the vocalize-style with made-up phonetic syllables invented by the composer, Karl Jenkins. This particular piece has the same name for the song and the performing group, and begins thusly.

A-ri-a-di-e-mus la-te
A-ri-a-di-e-mus da
A-ri-a-di-na-tus la-ta a-du-a
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te
A-ra-va-ne tu-e va-te la-te-a

Ariadiemus - Ariadiemus

Hint/Bonus Question: What airline used this song in a 1994 commercial and in their preflight video?

United

5. Off the Florida Keys
There's a place called [Title]
That's where you wanna go
To get away from it all

Kokomo - Beach Boys

6. [Title], [Title with a pronoun change]
From the California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters

This Land Is Your Land - Woody Guthrie

7. Oh, father why are you so sad
On this bright Easter morn
When Irish men are proud and glad
Of the land where they were born?
Oh, son, I see in mem'ries view
A far-off distant day
When, being just a lad like you
I joined the IRA.

Nope. Some traditional that my favorite Celtic bands don't play...

"Present, virtually."

8. [Title]
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive me

Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

If I Should Fall from Grace with God - The Pogues

Hint/Bonus Question: What automobile company used this song in a commercial featuring a hockey mom driving around some hockey-playing kids?

Subaru

9. I love digging in the dirt
With just a pick and brush
Finding fossils is my aim
So I'm never in a rush
'Cause the treasures that I seek
Are rare and ancient things
Like Velociraptor's jaw
Or Archaeopteryx's wings
Now all the kids who wanna see'em
Are lining up at our museum

[Title, four words, declarative sentence]
That's who I am
That's who I am
That's who I am

I Am a Paleontologist - TMBG

10. I've had a life that's full
Everyone's been good to me
So fire up that fiddle, boy
And give me [title].
When the sun comes up
I will leave without a fight
The world is mine tonight.

One Last Drink - Enter the Haggis

I had two rules for creating this game. First, there had to be a recording of the song in my collection. (I've underlined the covers in my collection.) Next, to keep from picking selections that were too obscure, there had to be a Wikipedia entry for the song or at least for the album. Then I tried not to overwhelm you with Celtic music. Given the results, I think my mainstream music choices were far too easy. And for the Celtic stuff, I included a number of songs and groups that I've mentioned before in other Bored posts, as some of you noticed. You're welcome!

1. Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Early in the morning

Drunken Sailor A traditional sea shanty sung by many. I have covers by The Fenians, Great Big Sea, Kilrush, and the Cadgwith Fisherman's Chorus. (the last is on a CD called "Sea Songs & Shanties" by "various artists").

2. When I think of all the worries
People seem to find
And how they're in a hurry
To complicate their mind
By chasing after money
And dreams that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different
We've better things to do.

Let's Live For Today Originally by The Rokes. Made famous by The Grass Roots. Covered by Tempest, among others.

3. Tell her to buy me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true lover of mine

Scarborough Fair, a traditional Yorkshire ballad, most famously recorded by Simon and Garfunkel.

4. The following song doesn't have "lyrics" per se, because it's sung in the vocalize-style with made-up phonetic syllables invented by the composer, Karl Jenkins. This particular piece has the same name for the song and the performing group, and begins thusly.

Hint/Bonus Answer: Delta

5. Off the Florida Keys

To get away from it all

Kokomo by The Beach Boys

6. [Title], [Title with a pronoun change]
From the California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters

This Land Is Your Land Written by Woody Guthrie. Covered by Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, The Kingston Trio, Bruce Springsteen and many others.

7. Oh, father why are you so sad
On this bright Easter morn
When Irish men are proud and glad
Of the land where they were born?
Oh, son, I see in mem'ries view
A far-off distant day
When, being just a lad like you
I joined the IRA.

The Boys of the Old Brigade Written by Paddy McGuigan. Sung by almost every Irish band, including The Town Pants.

Nobody got tripped up by the fine print--very nice! A couple of you ignored the bonus completely, though, and only beast indicated that it was deliberate.

8. [Title]
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive me

Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

If I Should Fall From Grace With God Originally by The Pogues. Covered by The Fenians, The Young Dubliners, and many others.

Hint/Bonus Answer: Subaru

9. I love digging in the dirt
With just a pick and brush
Finding fossils is my aim
So I'm never in a rush
'Cause the treasures that I seek
Are rare and ancient things
Like Velociraptor's jaw
Or Archaeopteryx's wings
Now all the kids who wanna see'em
Are lining up at our museum

[Title, four words, declarative sentence]
That's who I am
That's who I am
That's who I am

I Am a Paleontologist by They Might Be Giants.

Okay, as you can tell by watching the video, this is from a children's album. So what? For the past couple of years, I've been doing volunteer work at the Paleontological Research Institution. When I heard this song, it instantly became my avocational anthem. For those of you who haven't heard it, I gave enough clues to make this a straightforward trivia question.

10. I've had a life that's full
Everyone's been good to me
So fire up that fiddle, boy
And give me [title].
When the sun comes up
I will leave without a fight
The world is mine tonight.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

Frank, I couldn't find a recording of Drunken Sailor by Peter, Paul and Mary. I'll give you the point if you can find a link.

littlebeast13 did a good job of remembering the bands I've talked about before. One of them actually matched up with the right song! :) And he gets a humor point for his other fine attempts. He deliberately doesn't get the "Present, virtually" bonus, but in so declining the points, he stays true to my own usage of "Present," in which I'm not looking for points. Well played, sir! (Oh, and I was considering using Enya as a last minute substitution, but I ran out of time.)

smilergrogan gets a humor point and a "close enough" point for #9.

Bravo to Hotseat Or Bust! for getting the clue on #9 (or did you really know the song, like Esto and Sprots?) Elwood almost had it, but he got his 'ologists mixed up. Indiana Jones searches for man-made artifacts, not fossils.

Appa23 nails #4! I don't know if Lil Bit's dance solo looked like Anastasia Volochkova's dancing, but if she can master the fire magic like that, she'll be a sensation! :)

T_Bone0806 was on a roll early on, but his blanket guessing of ETH was only good for one point in the later part of the game.

Two extra syllables cost Estonut two points (since the name was hidden in the "lyrics", I've got to use J! rules on this one), but he still wins the day!

SportsFan68 gets a humor point for her creative choice of Jim Carrey on the Truman Show for a "Drunken Sailor" cover. I checked IMDb quotes to confirm that, too!

mellytu74, did I forget to include the part of the fine print where I explained that the "Present, virtually" bonus can only be used once per game and not on every question? I'll compensate you with a humor point for trying!

mntetn tries for an unannounced Krox bonus, but since I don't have Tower of Strength or anything by Gene McDaniel in my CD collection, it fails to match the day's theme.

I was hoping you would appreciate that!

You certainly can't say I don't read your LSWE answers... I just remember the bands that have funny names. I think I used the Silly Wizard/Enter the Haggis/The Town Pants trio in the last game you hosted as well...

Ugh, you were seriously thinking of putting Enya in this game? Oh my...

Hey, I've got seven of her albums!

Study up for the next Marley Music game, people. Four years from now?
