Just a theme today, no matching them up (yay, because scoring those are a beyotch!) so, for an extra five points for those who faithfully read the opening to this far, there's a theme within a theme here concerning 4, 5 and 9. And if you don't know one of those songs, knowing the extra theme will help you get it.

1. To tease ‘em and thrill ‘em
To torture and kill ‘em
Is her delight they say
I saw her at the seashore with a great big pan
There was *** pouring water on a drowning man

2. And she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right
And if they don't then nobody else will
But she used to have a carefree mind of her own
With a devilish look in her eye

3. I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
I looked at her and she at me

4. Making love in the afternoon with ***
Up in my bedroom
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place

5. Then one day I left my gal
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost
So gol-durned lost
Not even God can find me

6. Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, (** ), really

7. Ridin' in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim
Y'know, those were different times
Oh, all the poets, they studied rules of verse
And the ladies, they rolled their eyes

8. When they had the earthquake in San Francisco
Back in nineteen six
They said that old mother nature
Was up to her old tricks.
That's the story that went around
But here's the real lowdown

9. First I rise then I fall
Seems like you don't want the love
Of this man at all
And it's sure been a lonely time
Right up to the time I met you
oh if you take a love like mine

10. There's no time to lose I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind
Ain't life unkind

Theme: This shouldn’t be too difficult today

Bonus Bonus: Which line in #3 had to be changed to avoid a trademark challenge by what major corporation?

Super Bonus: In which 1946 movie (which also fits today’s theme) was song #8 featured?

Veronica - Elvis Costello

3. I pushed her away

I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
I looked at her and she at me
Lola - Kinks

4. Making love in the afternoon with ***
Up in my bedroom
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel (This may have been solo Simon, but if so I'll take partial credit because I had a hell of a time pulling this one....)

5. Then one day I left my gal
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost
So gol-durned lost
Not even God can find me

6. Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, (** ), really
I know this one, but can't place it....

7. Ridin' in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim
Y'know, those were different times
Oh, all the poets, they studied rules of verse
And the ladies, they rolled their eyes

8. When they had the earthquake in San Francisco

Theme: This shouldn’t be too difficult today - Girls names, another theme I used in the past (albeit, after this was first-run)....

Bonus Bonus: Which line in #3 had to be changed to avoid a trademark challenge by what major corporation? - The champagne was not allowed to taste like Coca Cola. It was changed to cherry cola, which is the version I always heard back in the 90's when I first started listening to a 70's station. That same station today now plays the Coca Cola version....

Super Bonus: In which 1946 movie (which also fits today’s theme) was song #8 featured?

2. Elvis Costello - Veronica
3. The Kinks - Lola
4. Simon & Garfunkel - Cecilia
10 . The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday

Theme - A woman's name in the song title.
Bonus Bonus - I'm guessing that the line "cherry cola (C-O-L-A cola)" originally said "Coca-Cola". That was an odd line at the time because Coke and Pepsi really didn't make cherry cola popular until the late 1980s.

I'm not great with themes, and having a "theme within a theme" doesn't exactly give me confidence. Nonetheless, we soldier on.

Hard Heart Hannah - Ella Fitzgerald. There's a (Disney, I assume) song called "Whale of a Tale" that we sang in 6th grade chorus with a verse about Harpoon Hannah, and somehow I got them confused.

2. And she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right

1. To tease ‘em and thrill ‘em
To torture and kill ‘em
Is her delight they say
I saw her at the seashore with a great big pan
There was *** pouring water on a drowning man

HARD HEARTED HANNAH - ELLA FITZGERALD

Also would have taken Ray Charles but, surprisingly, not Frank Sinatra!

2. And she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right
And if they don't then nobody else will
But she used to have a carefree mind of her own
With a devilish look in her eye

VERONICA - ELVIS COSTELLO

3. I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
I looked at her and she at me

LOLA - THE KINKS

4. Making love in the afternoon with ***
Up in my bedroom
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place

CECILIA - SIMON & GARFUNKEL

5. Then one day I left my gal
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost
So gol-durned lost
Not even God can find me

THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA - HARVE PRESNELL

Also Ed Ames and The Kingston Trio, who knew? Half credit for those who CYA'ed with 'cast of Paint Your Wagon'.

6. Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, (** ), really

ELENORE - THE TURTLES

Yay for mrkelley to be the only one to get the correct spelling!

7. Ridin' in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim
Y'know, those were different times
Oh, all the poets, they studied rules of verse
And the ladies, they rolled their eyes

SWEET JANE - LOU REED or VELVET UNDERGROUND

I don't know why I didn't use I Love You, Suzanne, since that's my fave Lou Reed Song

8. When they had the earthquake in San Francisco
Back in nineteen six
They said that old mother nature
Was up to her old tricks.
That's the story that went around
But here's the real lowdown

PUT THE BLAME ON MAME - RITA HAYWORTH

Rita actually did have a voice and had a few albums where she sang this, but Anita Ellis is also accepted under the Marnie Nixon rule. Caro is thinking of the wrong Mame.

9. First I rise then I fall
Seems like you don't want the love
Of this man at all
And it's sure been a lonely time
Right up to the time I met you
oh if you take a love like mine

FANNY (BE TENDER WITH MY LOVE) - BEE GEES

10. There's no time to lose I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind
Ain't life unkind

RUBY TUESDAY - ROLLING STONES

Theme: This shouldn’t be too difficult today

LADIES' NAMES

The extra theme, which I didn't expect anybody to get, is that my cats' names are in here: Lola (although she was named for Gwen Verdon), Maria(h) (she was named for this song before anybody knew who Mariah Carey was), Cecilia and Fanny. Poor Chloe was left out because she was named after the Gus Kahn song and that would have been somewhat dirty pool. I think at least one person got this the first time, but I think that fact was more well known at the time.

Bonus Bonus: Which line in #3 had to be changed to avoid a trademark challenge by what major corporation?

The Coca-Cola/Cherry Cola deal. In response to somebody's thought, although commercial cherry cola wasn't as readily available back then, cherry coke was quite popular in restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, etc. The real kind were you put a shot of cherry syrup in there and topped it off with some maraschinos. Yes, I used to be a soda jerk, BITD.

Super Bonus: In which 1946 movie (which also fits today’s theme) was song #8 featured?

GILDA

You know, the one where she did that shit with her hair.

Looks like tbone and ghost are the only repeaters, and they both picked up quite a few points from last time.
