The Boston Red Sox players have refused to take the field for their last spring training game. Apparently they are supporting the coaches who will not receive the 40k bonus for going to Japan to open the season.

Good for the players.

Probably a lot more people will know about the coaches getting screwed over than if they took the field.

I, for one, would have never known.

The Sox won't play this game unless their coaches get paid the same $40K bonus as the players and manager get.

So what they don't play?

What does that cost TPTB?

Do they have to refund tickets? What kind of weight is it that they are throwing around?

You are not this naive. This is tremendously bad publicity for a sport that has been beaten about the head and shoulders due to players taking performance enhancing drugs. The coaches are tremendously underpaid, in most cases, and while that is not the fault of TPTB, TPTB are the ones who decided not to pay the $40K to each coach. Don't tell me you can't see that.

I can't see what you are reacting to.

I do see that it is unfair to not pay the coaches.

I wanted to know how far out on the skinny branches the players were going in solidarity.

I wanted to see how at risk they are willing to put themselves for what they think is fair and just.

I wanted to know if this was just a gesture or a real backing.

I am still confused by your tone back to me.

I think my wife would say I'm being pissy today. Physically I'm still not 100%, and it seems like all types of little things are picking at me today. It just seemed like your post was an example of someone being deliberately obtuse. After reading your last post, I understand why you continued to ask your questions. Sorry for being snippy.

And after all this, the Red Sox are going to Japan after all. There has been a settlement of some sort, the details are not available (at least to me), but there was baseball this afternoon and the Red Sox are leaving soon for Japan. There is no word if Boston is traveling to Tokyo on Oceanic Airlines.

Rexer,

You are a sweet guy. There is probably nothing you could do or say that would change my opinion about you. I am sorry you are having a prickly day.

If you want to be more pissy with me, it's okay by me. Maybe it will make you feel better.

I would guess that whatever gesture the players made, had some affect.

Underpaid, compared to what? How much does an average MLB coach make for that seasonal job? My employer never gave me an extra $40K when they sent me on a quick business trip.

There are quotes in some of the stories that say the bonus money was anywhere from 20 - 40 % of their annual salary, IIRC. I guess that's underpaid only by Major League standards.

Why does everyone continue to undermine my authority? And over some old pissant coaches? Just wait until next year when I have them playing games in Japan, China, Mongolia, Chad, and Chile..... in the same week!

I will not comment on overpaid or underpaid - I will say that if my team (or department) was being sent on a quick business trip and everyone but me was being paid extra for the quick business trip - I'd be annoyed.

I read the post yesterday and thought it was a past based account - like they went and weren't being paid. I see that wasn't true. I didn't know enough about when seasons start.

Knowing when the season starts is actually no help at all. The MLB season should start around the beginning of April like it usually does, but instead will be starting early next Wednesday morning while people who don't have night jobs are asleep....

My good pal Larry Bud Selig is an idiot.....

It would have helped in understanding the post yesterday, as I thought the season already started - not that it was starting next week.
