I recently cooked some brined grouses (Christie is right; brining makes for a very flavorful, juicy bird) in a cast iron Dutch oven over an open fire and burned on some stuff, and I'm afraid that I removed not only the burned on material, but also every molecule of seasoning using detergents, Soft Scrub, and salt/oil, all applied vigorously with a plastic scrubbie. I returned it to its owner spotlessly clean and told her she would have to re-season it. Aargh! But the grouses were worth it.
