Has anybody seen it or plan to?

We have a 3D Imax theater in my town, so I'm gathering a group of friends to go next week ...

It looks fabulous.

This has been on my short list of the 3 to 4 movies I see each year.

I'm waiting on the SSS review to decide weather to go or not.

It's gotten excellent reviews, and the visuals are supposed to be very good in the 3D/IMAX formats. We'll try to get there Sunday. Doing 3D right requires a director to devote a lot of time to staging every shot, not just a handful of "gotcha" moments. I would expect Cuaron to know what he's doing, the same way directors like Cameron and Scorsese have gotten it right.

I've never seen a 3-D movie before.

OK, go back to the test pattern.

Our reviewer gave it an A+. He said the 3D is brilliant but the story is even better. He said Sandra Bullock, who has always done good work, does her best work in this movie (Clooney plays the same type of smart-aleck he often plays).

Mrs. SSS and I saw Gravity today. Usually, I don't go to see movies in 3D, but we made a point to see this one, and the 3D really contributes to the weightlessness effect. The effects are tremendous (I'd hope this wins the visual effects Oscar), and the physics of the film seem very accurate. However, beyond the special effects, it's a great movie, both as a character study and a suspense film (will they or won't they get back). It's only about 90 minutes, so there's not any padding as it moves along. From what I've heard, it's even more spectacular in IMAX.

The film did $55 million over the weekend, much better than expected, and I would think it's got a good shot at a number of technical nominations as well as a director's nod for Cuaron. The biggest problem the film faces in the creative Oscar categories is that it's got more or less direct competition from All is Lost, directed by J.C. Chandor (Margin Call). It's basically the same story of people stranded in very harsh trying circumstances, except it's got Robert Redford adrift at sea instead of Bullock and Clooney in outer space. And Redford is even more of a darling (and felt to be overdue) with Oscar voters than Bullock and Clooney. My guess will be that Gravity gets a Best Picture nod but not a Best Director nomination.

Saw Gravity this evening in Imax. As the critics suggested, we sat right in the front rows.

It was fantastic as a movie experience. With Imax, you really DID want to duck when "things" floated by ...

As SSS said, Oscar for sure as best picture. I also think Sandra Bullock will be up for best actress -- she has almost the entire film by herself. And it's hard to act "by yourself" in front of a blue screen ... I disagree, though, about the director not getting a nod. He co-wrote, produced and directed the film and he'll get kudos from the industry for "saving" Imax/3D and bringing families, teens AND old folks into the theater.

We saw it in 3D at the beach on a rainy day. Great story, magnificent effects. Some asshats came into the theater during the silent opening and messed that all up for us.

I think Cuaron has a shot at best Director but it's rare to win major awards with a release in October. I think Bullock has done her best work yet but she has long odds to win, not being British or some of the other traditional traits. I didn't think she should have won for The Blind Side, but she can always say she won in a year when Meryl Streep was nominated.

I'm thinking of seeing it Saturday or Sunday at the Imax here. I may get lazy and wait a week though.
