Mrs. Buff is "non-essential." She has been told to report to work Tuesday, and if the shutdown occurs, she will be sent home.

I am so angry over this I can't see straight. They are holding the lives and families of loyal, career public servants hostage to make a political point. There are friends of ours who won't be able to pay their mortgages, their kids' tuition, their medical bills. This is happening because a group of folks got scared about possible primary opponents running to their right. This is also happening because federal employees are the most picked on, villified, easy-to-hit targets in the political universe. You want to stop Obamacare--get the votes to stop it in a straight up and down vote. You can't do that--then welcome to democracy and move on to the next fight.

Sure, shut down the government and stick it to those fat-cat Washington bureaucrats...

...then call your congressman when your Medicare doesn't get processed and ask HIM what HE'S going to do to get you your diabetes medication. Or process your flood insurance claim, or guide you through Yosemite, or process that grant for your school district. All "non-essential," just like my wife who's worked to protect our nation for over 25 years

I now, officially, hate the guys who are doing this.

I'm in the same boat as your wife - I have to come in tomorrow and wait around to see if I'm considered "essential". My guess is that I'm not.

My contact at the consulting company is out of the office today so I probably won't know until tomorrow either. I should know before going into the office though as I start work at 4 PM.

Kinda wondering if BD is in the same boat. She teaches at a CDC on base and was told that she won't be paid during a shutdown. And staff sergeant SIL's pay is problematic as well. Mebbe teachers are essential to the gummint, though Congress hasn't acted as if that were true.

All active duty military must work but will not be paid.

I have my own opinions, which I'm keeping to myself as that anything I may say can and will be used against me in a court of law (according to Jack Webb).

The provisions in the bill specify that if the Senate does not pass a budget resolution, pay will be withheld until Jan. 3, 2015, when the 113th Congress ends.

So they still get paid, they just have to wait a while.

The folks I work with who are government employees have all been declared "essential" so they will be showing up for work tomorrow if there's a shutdown. They won't get paid however unless there's a bill after the fact to pay them. I had an email in my .gov account waiting for me when I got here that said that for us contractors it's business as usual (which had better include pay!).

We are safe at the Warfare Center, but our friends next door at the War College may get hit hard.

My EPA friend will go in at her usual time tomorrow and expects to be sent home about 8:30 a.m. along with everybody else at the Federal Center in Denver.

I'm at work. The courthouse is open. The Judiciary is "essential". We have enough money to get paid for 10 business days. If the shutdown goes beyond that we have to go on a rotation so someone would be here working every day but we would not get paid. Well, we probably would eventually. That's how it has worked in the past.

I'm on vacation next week. This week looks OK and then I expect things to be back to normal by the time I return to work on October 15.

The House has passed several CRs. (Why we are doing CRs to fund the government is a whole other discussion). Every one of them funds the government essential services. But the Senate and the President refuse to compromise or even talk. of course it's Republicans that get blamed. But it was one Congress in 2008 that passed the bill (hijacked the process) in question without a single Republican vote, and to this day 70% of the populace DON'T WANT OBAMACARE, but the media and the democrat propaganda machine succeed in defining the story.

We go through this quagmire so often. The problem is we've given so much power and so much responsibility to one entity, the Federal Government. WHY? When these fools have shown time and time again that they cannot handle the simplest of things, and are completely irresponsible. We, stupidly, let them take on everything. And they are more than happy to be given more and more power over our lives. If everything weren't controlled by the Federal Government, when they shut themselves down because of political differences or because they can't manage money, then we wouldn't be so much effected, would we?

My wife is concerned with WIC, the Women's Children and Infants program that provides assistance for child care. There was a run on it yesterday, because people were scared. I'm sure it's a wonderful program, and needed by many. So why is it run by the Federal Government? Can the States not do that? Wouldn't it be better that way? If an individual state got itself in the fiscal and political mess that the Fed is perpetually in, only that one state would be effected, and they could appeal for help. When the Fed goes down, there is no appealing for help. It is down. That is the same scenario with so many things. One of the unintended consequences of giving so much to the Federal Government is that we put all our eggs in one very leaky basket.

The Tea Party Republicans aren't exactly in a chatty mood, either, and aren't going to compromise. IMO the main reason that the more level-headed Republicans aren't willing to speak out is because they're afraid of a primary challenge from their right (as is happening in my home state of Kentucky).

Look, if 70% of the people are truly against Obamacare, then why did the President get re-elected? If it's that bad, then let it go into effect and when it fails, as it inevitably will, then the Republicans should have no trouble gaining a veto-proof majority in both houses of Congress in the 2014 elections and the White House in 2016.

Do you know why the majority of Americans are opposed to Obamacare? Because they have been lied to about it!

Also did you see the poll that showed Obamacare is more unpopular than the Affordable Care Act?
