I'm not finding much time to read these lately, except for the last one, which I listen to in my car.

Brian Switek does his own narration for this audiobook. People often find that interesting, in the case of famous authors, but I'm finding that Switek's voice doesn't have the quality to hold my attention. He may be talking about something interesting, but I'm hearing drone, drone, drone, drone--huh? What did he just say?

Since I won the Amazon Kindle Fire in a drawing at work, I've done more reading in the last six months than I have in the six years before that. I didn't think I would get into it that much, but I found that Amazon has a ton of pretty decent stuff that's available for free. When I first got the Kindle, I thought the only free stuff I could get would be either public domain Dickens and Austen and the like or horrible self-published crap. However, between the Amazon freebies and other deals I've gotten I've amassed a tremendous amount of pretty good stuff. It's not Grisham or King but it is entertaining. And when I totaled up how much I've spent on books and software apps (mostly word puzzle games), it came to $14.

Collins is the best known of the authors I've gotten (he wrote Road to Perdition). I've got two more Heller books in my queue.

The book on my nightstand is Happy Hour in Hell, a gritty urban fantasy by Tad Williams. --Bob

I'm in the middle of this, but it's slow and boring and hasn't gotten even close to talking about Bunker Hill yet so I've read several others instead.

My son and d-i-l alerted me to a new Hunger Gamesy sort of trilogy, Divergent, author Veronica Roth. Finished Divergent, starting Insurgent. Haven't preordered Allegiant yet. Also got Dr. Sleep, King's sequel to The Shining. Got The Shining since it's been many years since I read and reread it and decided to reread it again to refresh on details before I really get into Dr. Sleep.

I will start these in a few days after I get the first set of exams read.

I just bought and started reading a copy of Stephen King's Dr. Sleep. I used to read King regularly, but I stopped some time after 2005. But since this is a sequel to one of my favorite books of his, I had to dive back in.

I wasn't aware that Erik Larson had another book out! Would you recommend this one to someone who really doesn't find Germany that interesting and political unrest (particularly of the Nazi kind) even less so?

Why would I consider reading a book with a subject that doesn't interest me? I read Devil in the White City and really liked it. I really wasn't interested in the World's Fair stuff, but I found myself enjoying that part more than the serial killer part, so perhaps Larson might surprise me again.

Side note question for anybody more up on entertainment than myself: When I googled to find out the plot of this book, the sidebar gave a list of topics or people that were also searched for along with this and they had H.H.Holmes listed with a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio. Is he involved in a Holmes movie?

Well, I'm not sure. I'm not quite half way through the book, myself.

If you're not interested in the central topic, perhaps the personal life of Ambassador Dodd (a college professor who ran into conflict the generally-wealthy diplomatic corps by, among other things, insisting that he'd live on his modest government income rather than throwing lavish entertainments at his own expense, as was the norm) or--more likely--his 24-year-old daughter (who had a number of affairs while in Berlin, including one with a diplomat from the Soviet Embassy, despite both of them being secretly married) of interest?

It's good but not close at all to Devil in the White City. It's as if the author wrote this truly amazing great book and then someone came along and said, "Well, Erik, now you have to write another one," and he didn't want to but did anyway even though his heart wasn't in it.
