I got the answer and I guess the "underperforming runners" is supposed to lead us to ice cream eaters, but I'm not sure I'd call that "appropriately".

Gillette had an ad campaign tie-in with "Man of Steel" regarding this. FWIW, in the Silver Age of comics, he used a mirror to direct his heat vision and burn off the whiskers. Of course I never could understand how that would work since his beard should be as invulnerable as the rest of him.
