My firstborn son, Terrell, would have been 12 years old today.

<sigh>...

This thread shouldn't go without any replies, but I think this is another occasion where nobody knows what to say.

Condolences to you on this bittersweet day, Nelly.

I think you've told us this before, but how and when did Terrell die?

I didn't know what to say. I have never lost a child and can't even imagine your pain.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am with Marley, I don't think I know the story. If it isn't too painful, would you want to post it?

:(

Many hugs to you and your family...I hope you are able to be comforted by good memories today, and glad that you're still celebrating the occasion of his birth.

Yeah, it happened on the afternoon of Sunday, August 7, 2005. As I recall, we were in the middle of a gushunt when I posted this on The Ugly Bored® the morning after. Terrell and his best friend were shot and killed while playing basketball with their friends. It was a random act of gang violence that the kids were unknowingly and unfortunately in the middle of. I disappeared from the Bored for several months after that. Although his death is not as painful to me now as it was then, not a day goes by that I don't think about it.

He was only 9 years old? I am so sorry. Did the police find the person who shot him?

They did after a couple of months. Turned out he was involved in another murder a couple of weeks later a couple of blocks from that basketball court.

I think there can be nothing more heartbreaking than the senseless death of a child. My heart cries for your pain, Nelly, but is lifted by how you seen able to remember the joy. You are very strong.

I do remember the horrible story & think about it often, though that won't help you. My heart goes out to people senselessly killed like that. And their families. He still lives in your heart; always remember the good times.

I'm so sorry Nelly. I can't imagine having to live through what you did. If anyone is allowed a moment of sentimentality, it's you. May he rest in peace.
