I got a piece of junk mail today that really,
really must be intended for some
other "Mary DeV-----" of Pittsburgh. Someone much, um,
older than I am!
Yep -- my very first come-on from
AARP!
Really, I won't qualify for at least another 4-1/2 months!

I bet our invitations aren't getting out of the Post Office. They have nice big trash cans and recycle bins there.

That's OK, you can still schedule your colonoscopy.

Gee, thanks! Like it's not enough that the nurse practitioner referred to me as "the elderly patient" back in December!
Keith actually started getting these things quite a few years before he reached the magic age. This one's my first.
And my youngest sister (6 years younger than I am) just let me know that she got an invitation a year ago! She says she's tempted to join & take advantage of all those Senior discounts.

I've gotten these for years and always laugh about them.
I turn 49 this Wednesday - not laughing any more

This came up in discussion a couple weeks ago. AARP will accept her money for an "associate membership" now, but she won't qualify for discounts that come with full membership until she's 50.
Now that the TV industry don't even consider me part of the marginally valuable demographic (those 36ers-49ers who can be lumped in with the really valuable 18-35 group but can never be considered on their own) at least there's still one group that wants me!
So where's my card, AARP? That "reply by this date" pseudo-card that came with your junk mail doesn't count.

Quickly... find a toll-free number on that mailing and RUN, don't walk, to a phone and ask to be taken off their mailing list--if not for them, then for the companies who buy their mailing list.
I'm convinced AARP is the cause of global warming. Before I called them, I was starting to get mailings for everything from hearing aids to burial insurance.
--dimmzy, who doesn't know how she got on any of their lists since she's only 29

My poor husband thought he had torn ligaments in his shoulder and knee and was having a hard time processing the diagnosis that he was arthritic. I told him that at least it came from years of fun and not from work, so he can't live with the regret that he toiled away and never got to see the bottom of the Grand Canyon because he worked until he was too old and crippled to make it down.
The body just gives out after a while. And I'm expecting that AARP mail to start hitting our box soon, too. He'll probably toss it for a year or two before he realizes the hotel discounts are better than AAA....

Guess what I found out last night. One of my co-workers on nights turned 50 yesterday, and another one turns 50 today. Counting you, what are the odds of my knowing three people who turn 50 on 3 consecutive days?
You old people surround me....

The stars were aligned that week!
Prince Albert of Monaco turned 50 the day before I did.

July 4th celebrations involved a different kind of fireworks the year before, more likely.
I've got two cousins turning 50 in the next couple of weeks. Surprisingly, I found some year-specific birthday cards that weren't smarmy, disgusting or otherwise something idiotic. Maybe the card companies are finally learning that not everyone "appreciates" cards that are insulting or laced with sexual innuendo. Especially when they cost $3 - $5 each, plus your postage.

50 ain't what it used to be.
I love being in my 50s.
I celebrate being in my 50s.
I am wiser, I am stronger, I am calmer, I am more focused and more clear about what really matters to me.
It sure as heck beats the alternative.

And, Pea's ass is higher, too. Just sayin.
(BTW Pea, David's birthday gift (he turns 45 this week) is a new to us treadmill with a flexdeck. You must come give it a run when we have it set up.)
