ANSWERS/POINTS LS METAL MONDAY March 17

#1 Post by fantine33 » Mon Mar 17, 2008 7:44 am

Remember, just because it's on Metal Monday doesn't necessarily mean it's metal (so save the cards and letters on #3). Just for clarification: The bonus instrumental is work and composer, the bonus bonus is an artist and the super bonus clues might be out of date by now, so please don't give an essay because you know what movie I mean.

So I can hear you

3. He's got juju eyeball he one

4. They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams

5. And if they stare
Just let them burn their eyes on you moving

Don't let them change a thing that you're doing

6. Has anyone heard the tales you tell
Or seen the scars you wear

8. So you think my singing's out of time

And I don't know why
And I don't know why anymore

9. You're my sunshine
And I want you to know

I really love you

10. Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can't wait for the night
I hate to think I've been blinded baby
Why can't I see you tonight

Bonus Instrumental: This Baroque master composed this work, consisting of 31 pieces, for a fellow student of one of his innumerable children, for whom it is now named. The composer entitled it “Keyboard Practice, consisting of an Aria with Diverse Variations, for the Harpsichord with 2 Manuals. Composed for Music Lovers, to Refresh their Spirits.” This practice piece has become one of his best known works (and he had scads) and is highly praised in all pianistic circles. And, yes, this has a tenuous link to Metal Monday.

Bonus Bonus: Perhaps the most famous rendition was recorded in 1955 by a young Canadian pianist who took the world by storm. When the album came out on CD, much rejoicing was to be had and I had to rush out and get it. Best of all, they left in all the grunts and humming for which the performer was noted. This performer also has a recording of a different piece by the same composer aboard whatever spaceship that was with the naked people plaque that caused such a stir.

Super Bonus: This work has also been featured in many movies. I thought it particularly well used in this movie, in which it accompanies a scene of one man being gutted and another having his face peeled off. What is the name of this Oscar winning film? Hint: As best I recall, it was the last movie to win Oscars for Best Actor and Actress, Movie and Director, sweeping the Big Four.

Sounds familiar...

Come Together - Beatles (Who does that other version of this song, is it Aerosmith? I actually like it, which makes me think it either can't be them or it's one of their older ones, because most post-Run DMC Aerosmith mostly makes me ill....)

And I don't know why anymore
Cum on Feel the Noiz - Quiet Riot (I may be wrong on the misspellings, but that's hard to account for. I can't believe this was originally done by Slade, though I have never heard their version of it...)

9. You're my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
You're My Best Friend - Queen

10. Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shining

Hmmm. I can't recall gutting and face peeling in the same movie; best I could do is a pair of movies: Braveheart and Cocoon. And those were only facemasks being peeled off in the latter.

I'll have to put Bach. Something by him.

Well, the only pianists I can think of are Van Cliburn and Liberace. So I will just have to cross my fingers and hope Van Cliburn is Canadian....

Ah. The Cage Scene. The Silence of the Lambs. Good thing I've already got my corned beef and cabbage for tonight, or I'd have to make liver and fava beans instead...

Spoiler
1. In walks her daddy
Standin' six foot four

Cherry Pie - Warrant

2. You know I call you
I call you on the telephone
I’m only hoping that you’re home
So I can hear you
When you say those words to me
?

3. He's got juju eyeball he one
Holy roller he's got
Hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker he just
Do what he please
Come Together - the good version is by The Beatles, but the more metallic version is by Aerosmith

4. They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
I know it's by Black Sabbath, but I have no idea on the title

5. And if they stare
Just let them burn their eyes on you moving
And if they shout
Don't let them change a thing that you're doing
Hold Your Head Up - Argent
back 20-something years ago, WNEW-FM did a huge promotion around the fact that they were going to soon play their 2,000,000th song. One fo the clues to what the song was, was "metal of a silver variety". I never cared enough to pay attention to what the song actually was, but I'm pretty sure it was by Argent

6. Has anyone heard the tales you tell
Or seen the scars you wear
Did anyone speak up when you fell
Does anybody care
?

7. I know you think
That love is the way you make it
So I don't wanna be there
When you decide to break it
Love Bites - Def Leppard. The different song with the same title by Judas Priest is way better. But then, that has something to do with it being difficult not to be better than a Def Leppard song.

8. So you think my singing's out of time
Well it makes me money
And I don't know why
And I don't know why anymore
Cum on Feel the Noize - better known version by Quiet Riot. Just plain better version by Slade

9. You're my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
You're My Best Friend - Queen

10. Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can't wait for the night
I hate to think I've been blinded baby
Why can't I see you tonight
Fool in the Rain - Led Zeppelin. The song that Genesis' "Misunderstanding" was ripped off from.

Bonus Instrumental: This Baroque master composed this work, consisting of 31 pieces, for a fellow student of one of his innumerable children, for whom it is now named. That's gotta be J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations. I hear "Baroque master", "whole lotta pieces" and "keyboard practice" and I think "Well-Tempered Clavier", but the named after someone means it must be Goldberg. I assume one or the other of the metal songs ripped off a part of it.

Glenn Gould

The Silence of the Lambs. Originally typed this with a lower-case "L" so it looked like the silence of the iambs, which I imagine to be a short poem.

The Silence of the Lambs (and it's still the last to win the Grand Slam, so relax!).

Just for clarification: The bonus instrumental is work and composer, the bonus bonus is an artist and the super bonus clues might be out of date by now, so please don't give an essay because you know what movie I mean.

3. He's got juju eyeball he one
Holy roller he's got
Hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker he just

COME TOGETHER -- BEATLES

Bonus Instrumental: This Baroque master composed this work, consisting of 31 pieces, for a fellow student of one of his innumerable children, for whom it is now named. The composer entitled it “Keyboard Practice, consisting of an Aria with Diverse Variations, for the Harpsichord with 2 Manuals. Composed for Music Lovers, to Refresh their Spirits.” This practice piece has become one of his best known works (and he had scads) and is highly praised in all pianistic circles. And, yes, this has a tenuous link to Metal Monday.
J. S. Bach -- Well Tempered Clavier

ROGER WILLIAMS

Super Bonus: This work has also been featured in many movies. I thought it particularly well used in this movie, in which it accompanies a scene of one man being gutted and another having his face peeled off. What is the name of this Oscar winning film? Hint: As best I recall, it was the last movie to win Oscars for Best Actor and Actress, Movie and Director, sweeping the Big Four.

Bonus Instrumental: Bach's Goldberg Variations

Bonus Bonus: Glen Gould

Super Bonus: Thought "A Clockwork Orange" was big on Beethoven, not Bach. Thought "Last of the Mohicans" didn't win Oscars. I give up.

I can't give Caro 1/2 credit for Ozzy, since this was after the Oz. Yes, my favourite Sabbath song is Dio vintage!

In the answers I had D'yer Mak'er written down, so who knows which one actually made it in the game the firs go round.

GLENN GOULD

The 1 of 32 short films that had him explaining how the vacuum cleaner played Mozart was my favourite. It still blows my mind thinking about his mind. I think Prelude in C (from WTC) is the song in the space ship, but I'd have to look it up to make sure. So I won't be sure. Ha!

Am I the only person in the known universe who LIKED the Sgt Pepper movie?
I own it. On DVD, so I can't say it was this old VHS copy I found at a garage sale for a quarter.

It is soooo cheesy, with the All-American small town boys not able to speak since they are all Australian or British. Paul Nicholas just lights up the screen as evil cousin Dougie. And I had COMPLETELY forgotten about that deus ex machina ending until I rewatched it last year!

Very high on my Guilty Pleasures list....

Paul Nicholas must've been typecast as an evil cousin in rock musicals, as he also played the evil cousin Kevin in "Tommy".

I saw "Sgt. Pepper" once. Just once. For me to watch it again would require a court order, sedatives and that setup they put Hannibal Lecter in.
