ANSWERS/POINTS LS C&W WEEKEND March 15-16

#1 Post by fantine33 » Sat Mar 15, 2008 7:16 am

It's been a long, hard week and I just know everybody's jonesing for some more C&W Weekend! Am I right or am I right?

Though I prayed that you'd be true
In your heart, please just remember
(song title), I'm still in love with you

3. In a little cabaret in a South Texas border town
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all around
And all the girls from there to Austin
Were slippin' away from home and puttin' jewelry in hock

4. And darlin', it's sad but true
But the one thing I've learned from you
Is how the boy don't always get the girl

5. Same old bills on the dresser same old sheets on the bed
Same old pans in the kitchen same old day old bread
Same old sad eyed newsman on the same old tv set
Talkin' 'bout the big depression but we ain't worried yet

6. Don’t leave me, I cried
Don’t take that airplane ride
Cause you locked me out of your mind
And left me standing here behind

7. If I had a day that I could give you
I'd give to you a day just like today.
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I'd sing a song to make you feel this way

8. Of the many roads she's been down,
And the places that she's seen
Well they all look at her and say
God save the queen

9. Well I had a friend named Ramblin' Bob
Who used to steal, gamble and rob
He thought he was the smartest guy in town
But I found out last Monday
That Bob got locked up Sunday

10. There ain't no glamour in this tinseled land
Of lost and wasted lives
And painful scars are all that's left of me
I want to thank you girl for teaching me
Brand new ways to be cruel
And if I can find my mind, now I guess I'll just leave

Bonus Instrumental: This artist’s (the originator of the Bakersfield Sound) signature song, as well as the name of his band, was the break song (a short instrumental turnaround during which the singer promises they’ll be back in 15 minutes and encourages the patrons to buy some more beer) for my Dad’s band in the majority of its incarnations.

Bonus Bonus: This song was My Dad’s Band’s closing song, which was also the closing song for a popular Monday Night Football broadcaster (although I don’t think he got the idea from my dad). What is this song and who is its author? (5 points each)

Super Bonus: The artist of the Bonus Instrumental had his first #1 hit in 1963 and it was later covered by no less than Ringo Starr. What is it?

8. Of the many roads she's been down,
And the places that she's seen
Well they all look at her and say
God save the queen

Nope

9. Well I had a friend named Ramblin' Bob
Who used to steal, gamble and rob
He thought he was the smartest guy in town
But I found out last Monday
That Bob got locked up Sunday

In the Jailhouse Now, Soggy Bottom Boys

10. There ain't no glamour in this tinseled land
Of lost and wasted lives
And painful scars are all that's left of me
I want to thank you girl for teaching me
Brand new ways to be cruel
And if I can find my mind, now I guess I'll just leave

Nope

Bonus Instrumental: This artist’s (the originator of the Bakersfield Sound) signature song, as well as the name of his band, was the break song (a short instrumental turnaround during which the singer promises they’ll be back in 15 minutes and encourages the patrons to buy some more beer) for my Dad’s band in the majority of its incarnations.

Well, since Jim Lauderdale is too young to originate the sound, I'll have to put Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Thanks to my dad, I watched probably every episode of Hee Haw in my youth, and well, okay. You know.

Bonus Bonus: This song was My Dad’s Band’s closing song, which was also the closing song for a popular Monday Night Football broadcaster (although I don’t think he got the idea from my dad). What is this song and who is its author? (5 points each)

Turn Out the Lights, the Party's Over, someone besides Dandy Don

Super Bonus: The artist of the Bonus Instrumental had his first #1 hit in 1963 and it was later covered by no less than Ringo Starr. What is it?

I'm a Pickin' and I'm a Grinnin'. Okay, no clue.

No Hoyt fans in the house makes me sad. But you'd all know Joy to the World, wouldn't you?

2. All along I knew I'd lose you
Though I prayed that you'd be true
In your heart, please just remember
(song title), I'm still in love with you

RIGHT OR WRONG - GEORGE STRAIT

3. In a little cabaret in a South Texas border town
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all around

Thought for sure tbone would get this one, since he guessed it on an earlier game.

4. And darlin', it's sad but true
But the one thing I've learned from you
Is how the boy don't always get the girl

HERE IN THE REAL WORLD - ALAN JACKSON

5. Same old bills on the dresser same old sheets on the bed
Same old pans in the kitchen same old day old bread
Same old sad eyed newsman on the same old tv set
Talkin' 'bout the big depression but we ain't worried yet

HARD TIMES - LACY J. DALTON

6. Don’t leave me, I cried
Don’t take that airplane ride
Cause you locked me out of your mind
And left me standing here behind

SILVER WINGS - MERLE HAGGARD

7. If I had a day that I could give you
I'd give to you a day just like today.
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I'd sing a song to make you feel this way

SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDER - JOHN DENVER

Just Sunshine got half credit.

8. Of the many roads she's been down,
And the places that she's seen
Well they all look at her and say
God save the queen

QUEEN OF THE SILVER DOLLAR - EMMYLOUS HARRIS

9. Well I had a friend named Ramblin' Bob
Who used to steal, gamble and rob
He thought he was the smartest guy in town
But I found out last Monday
That Bob got locked up Sunday

IN THE JAILHOUSE NOW - WEBB PIERCE

Also Jimmie Rodgers or Johnny Cash (the second time Cash has paid off on a random guess by lb!) I thought mini's answer of Soggy Bottom Boys was a joke answer, until I was looking it up to see if Hank, Sr. ever did it and guess what? Ha!

10. There ain't no glamour in this tinseled land

THE PARTY'S OVER - WILLIE NELSON

mrkelley, when in doubt, put Willie Nelson!

Points

mrkelley and TLITF get some decent scores for the second C&W Weekend in a row, but overall it was pretty brutal. It appears that old school country doesn't have many wheels in any houses round these here parts.

2002 Points

Ouch, the first time was tough as well. I should have looked at previous day's scores to see if any of the games needed some adjustments.

Yup, and "No No Song", and "Gremlins", and appearances on talk shows..

I know OF the song, having heard it a time or two, but not well enough to know the lyrics. Guess it didn't occur to me to guess on this one as it mentions Texas twice.

I meant from O Brother, when they sing it at the political rally before Man of Constant Sorrow. It WAS a joke answer!

Spoiler
8. Queen of the Silver Dollar/Waylon Jennings

9. He's In the Jailhouse Now/Everybody (its a standard!)

Bonus Instrumtal by "The Race Is On" guy....gaaah

I've had a bad day

It started out good

it could be a country song

Seriously

Super Bonus: OK my brain is shut off

I can't believe how I just got knifed

Oh yes I can

Without giving up too much info, because "this board is not my friend; some are, but many aren't", I just wanna say to myself that if to get what I thought I might get (I still might, but it doesn't look good after all right now) I had to be a different, fakey person like the kind I can't stand for the past 23 years "just in case", I truly wouldn't have. Even if I knew there was sure monetary reward as the goal at the end. There have to be easier ways. Like the lottery! Like BAM under that old lamented phone game!

I'm such a big Hoyt fan I even know songs hardly anybody else knows. If my brain wasn't frozen-up I'd quote a few. Oh, "Evangelina, From Old Mexico" but that's not the one I was trying to think of. I'll come up with it. Its a great call-&-response #. I'm even such a big fan I actually watched that pilot tv show he did about the guy running a drive-away agency in a teeny town. Also because I used to work for drive-away agencies in this big town; believe me, none of the franchise owners were of Hoyt caliber. Many were of "he's in the jailhouse now" caliber.

I'll post that great song if I can think of it.

And I was listening (while driving on my 1st trip to Nova Scotia) that afternoon to WGBH's live 4th of July concert where Hoyt broke down on the intro to a song he wrote about this friend who always called Hoyt to bail him out of jail, but the one time Hoyt begged off, the guy died in a Mexican jail. Hoyt himself died too young a few years after.

song is something like

It was raining in the mountains & the something's (devil?) on the rise

If you don't give me shelter, I'll have no place to hide

Some you loose & some you win

& the something says

(enough for now; but it is coming back; love this song)

He used to have, oh, heck, who is that woman with the long long long hair as her trademark who's solo album I thought very weak, but who was a great backup singer singing for him; she died very young of ovarian cancer

that will come back to me too

She did a big-hit cover of a song someone else who released it should have had the bigger hit on
