I mentioned her the other day in hermillion's basketball thread. This is my oldest's high school. It is the toughest academic high school in one of the toughest districts in the area. A 3.8 is darn good.

Cy-Fair standout Nneka Ogwumike was named the Gatorade national girls basketball player of the year on Thursday.
The Gatorade Player of the Year is an award that honors a player for not only her performance on the basketball court, but also for her performance in the classroom. Ogwumike has a 3.8 GPA and is headed to Stanford.
Ogwumike, a center, led the Bobcats to state for the second consecutive year and they defeated DeSoto to win Cy-Fair’s first ever state title in girls’ basketball. Ogwumike was named the MVP of the UIL 5A state tournament. In the title game, she had 17 points and 17 rebounds.

This is very cool. Our neighbor's daughter is at Stanford-played for Oak Ridge baskeball up here in Montgomery County-academically she's stellar as well. I think she's a senior this year, assuming she hasn't "extended" her studies or anything. She's only had minimal playing time overall, but still.
When she gets home I'm going to ask her about Ogwumike, only because we get all the scoop from her dad, who, I think, has lived vicariously through his daughter. It's a small world.

Morgan is a junior. Stanford has a good team this year. They've lost to UCONN but defeated both Rutgers and Tennessee. And they lost two other games back to back against USC and UCLA.

I should have known you'd know. Also, she's a year behind our youngest. Their kids and ours are sort of stair stepped.
A couple of years ago we went to San Antonio when they played OU and it was cool to see her team beat ours. Not the beating, just the watching.
Have you seen many of the games?

I don't get to see a whole lot except through the lens. The win here in LA was a big upset. I'm not sure if she played. I photographed the SC men's game today against ASU. Macrae says there was a bad call near the end....I was at the SC end so I have no comment....except there were a lot of phantom calls at both ends.

I like your new avatar, Uly. Is this another of your self-portraits taken in the bathroom mirror?

I do like it. I also like firemen and baby dogs. I want to buy a copy of the calendar when it comes out.

Another peek at my avatar. The last of the puppies is gone, nine in all I think. The photoshoot was at one firestation since the puppies were rapidly being sent to their new homes. The puppies were cuter than cute but alas, for the ladies of the bored, the firemen kept their shirts on.
