It was fun watching Janine process this question - when the answer came to her she beamed with delight.

And once again Biblical illiteracy drags down a contestant (this happens frequently on J!, it seems to me).

Matthew is described as being a "publican" which is an individual who collected taxes for the Roman government. Taxation was "farmed out" and was often the result of money changing hands - the publican was free to collect as much as he desired, as long as the government got its required percentage. Not surprisingly many publicans became wealthy (if they weren't already) and were despised by the common folk. Matthew records the story of Jesus meeting Matthew, who was sitting at his collecting station; in the gospels of Mark and Luke this encounter is between Jesus and Levi.
