ANSWERS/POINTS LS SURPRISE TUESDAY March 11

Surprise Tuesday! Which means it's a little bit of everything. So that will either make everybody happy or everybody grumpy. I'm betting on the latter. Ha! I'm also taking the over on an over/under of 3 on the number of people who still aren't reading the opening and still won't put the title and artist for the Bonus Instrumental. I love it when there's action on something! Also remember, if there's a theme involved in the bonus, then the artists must fit the theme, if applicable (although that seems to only be an issue on standards day).

The original posting date was August 13, 2002.

1. The movie wasn’t so hot
It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep
Our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

2. As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party
With your silicone hump and your ten inch stump
Dressed like a priest you was
Tod Browning's freak you was

3. Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death’s construction

4. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now entertain us

5. Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

6. A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye

8. Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?

9. I'm like a strange cat running in the heat of the night
I've got a fire in my eyes, got a date with delight
Some kinda moanin' in the heart of the storm
I'm gonna love you so hard, you'll want your loving done

10. But I've got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too

Bonus Instrumental: This massive work, completed in 1909, is widely considered among pianists to be the most difficult piece to play ever written. It certainly got the best of one pianist, whose life story was made into a movie that I consider to be the best ever to show just how much one can love the piano. Apparently the critics agreed, it was nominated for Best Picture (but lost to one of those crappy, boring epic things) and won a Best Actor Oscar for the portrayal of pianist David Helfgott. The composer (who also fits into today’s theme) left Russia shortly after the October Revolution and had, among pianists, the largest hand span ever recorded (Van Cliburn comes close).

Bonus Bonus: Hard as it might be to imagine, there is a theme running through today’s selections. There are two hints in the Bonus Instrumental section.

Super Bonus: Why did I do this theme today rather than just save it for a Theme Thursday? (Note the original posting date of August 13, 2002.)

It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep
Our goose is cooked

Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers (Same set I used for this song last month, but it's really the only lyrics you can use without giving it away...)

2. As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party
With your silicone hump and your ten inch stump
Dressed like a priest you was
Tod Browning's freak you was

3. Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death’s construction
War Pigs - Black Sabbath

4. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now entertain us
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (I can guaran-darn-tee you that IF I played this game last time around, I didn't get this one. I wasn't able to translate the chorus of this song until I saw the Tori Amos version on VH1 Classic a couple years ago.... and even that didn't help me with the part TiV used in December....)

5. Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

6. A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye
I'm sure I know this, and have seen it in an LS before, and I doubt I'm remembering back 5 and a half years....

Faith - George Michael

Super Bonus: Why did I do this theme today rather than just save it for a Theme Thursday? (Note the original posting date of August 13, 2002.) - Because it was the 13th, dammit, and that's a good enough reason to do anything!

Okay, I read the intros. That's one!

The original posting date was August 13, 2002.

1. The movie wasn’t so hot
It didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep
Our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

Wake Up, Little Suzy, Everly Bros

2. As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party
With your silicone hump and your ten inch stump
Dressed like a priest you was
Tod Browning's freak you was

I can think this all day, and it's not coming. It's David Bowie, from the good days (not Let's Dance, I mean) and it's not Young Americans which I absolutely love and it's stuck in my head and I can't replace it with this.

3. Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death’s construction

Nope

4. With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now entertain us

Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana

5. Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and it would be faster to give you a list of who HASN'T recorded it (I'm partial to the Israel What's-his-name's Hawaiian ukelele version myself) so I'll put Judy Garland.

6. A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife

Familiar

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye

Is this Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue again? Crystal Gayle

8. Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?

Shaft, Isaac Hayes?

9. I'm like a strange cat running in the heat of the night
I've got a fire in my eyes, got a date with delight
Some kinda moanin' in the heart of the storm
I'm gonna love you so hard, you'll want your loving done

Familiar again

10. But I've got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too

Faith, George Michael

Bonus Instrumental: This massive work, completed in 1909, is widely considered among pianists to be the most difficult piece to play ever written. It certainly got the best of one pianist, whose life story was made into a movie that I consider to be the best ever to show just how much one can love the piano. I know this is "The Rach" by Rachmaninoff that was featured in Shine, but I don't know what the piece title or number is.

Bonus Bonus: Hard as it might be to imagine, there is a theme running through today’s selections. There are two hints in the Bonus Instrumental section.

I know Kurt Cobain killed himself and Judy OD'ed (didn't she?) and George Michael is just...well...

How about "Troubled Artists." The Ever-Popular Tortured Artist Effect. Which wouldn't work with Bowie, but I'm grasping at straws here.

Super Bonus: Why did I do this theme today rather than just save it for a Theme Thursday? Gah! I don't know. Elvis died in mid-August, but I think it was the 16th, so maybe today is the anniversary of Cobain's death?

Did beast tell you how much I suck at themes?(Note the original posting date of August 13, 2002.)

It's Rachmaninoff. I'm sure it's a piano concerto. I have no idea which one, if he named them or numbered them, how many he wrote, etc. Let's say Piano Concerto #5. Do you also want a performer? If so, I think you're talking about David Helfgott, though you've already given that.

Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife

The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix

7. Tell me no secrets tell me some lies
Give me no reasons give me alibis
Tell me you love me
And don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say good bye

Very, very familiar, but I'm not getting it

8. Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?

Theme from Shaft - Isaac Hayes
