Audience Constestant
Sam Spaulding

Sam is from North Carolina, but goes to school in CT. Finds it a bit cold but likes it.
Mere: What is the biggest difference between NY and NC?
Sam: People are not always as nice in NY
Mere: Get the hell out of here!
(laughter and applause)
Mere said Sam will find the nicest people in NY. Just to prove that, she will let Sam play the question, which would have been Tracey's $250K, but because of what Sam said it is only worth $1000. Kidding, worth $1K anyway.

For $1000:
As a teenager, what future author received his first writing paycheck for a joke he wrote for George Burns?
A. Larry McMurtry B. Ray Bradbury
C. Kurt Vonnegut D. Stephen King

Spoiler
Sam's reasoning:
Kurt Vonnegut does not strike him as a humorous writer, also on the old side
Ray Bradbury, that is possible
Not sure who Larry McMurtry is
Stephen King, plausible, prolific, probably was writing as a teenager
Guessed D, final answer
Answer
B. Ray Bradbury
Mere said it was a tough question

Nerves can definitely take their toll when you're under pressure but I don't understand why he didn't use a LL if he wasn't sure. I think it's better to burn one early than to leave with $0 and all your lifelines intact...just my two cents worth.

Sam was an Audience Contestant. To fill in the last few minutes of the show, he was picked from the audience to get a shot at the next question the previous contestant would have been given, for which he could have won $1,000, regardless of the original value of the question.

And as part of that deal, he doesn't get any lifelines!

Busted!!! I haven't been watching the show on a regular basis, so I guess I need to start tuning in again! Thanks for enlightening me, Marley.
