It's not only that he's a math teacher, the hook that they bantered about in his introduction was his ability to do math party tricks. He asked Meredith to give him a 3-digits number and a 2-digit number under 30, then he started rapidly counting by that 2-digit increment, starting with the 3-digit number. Meredith's reaction was "how do I know you're right?" and Jeff's answer was basically to grab a calculator and review the tape.

So, when it came time for a real math trick--worth not just $100 but a jump to the $250K question--he couldn't do it.

I agreed with what he reasoned, that a "40" referred to 40 ounces. Then I recalled that a 64 ounce soda bottle was approximately equal to a 2 liter bottle. 40/64 is approximately 2/3 and there was only one choice greater than 1/2 of 2000, so it had to be D.

If beast happens to read this thread, this is also an example that violates his rule of thumb, that the answer for range questions will be in the middle instead of an extreme, for Meredith's version of WWTBAM.
