Ps 8 Teacher A Real Winner
BY MARY ENGELS SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Special-education teacher Lisa Palma-McSherry prides herself on being there for her students when they need her most.

At no point in her 16-year career did that motto ring more true then during the dark, troubling days following the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on Manhattan.

Palma-McSherry, 38, ran a support program for students at Public School 8 on Staten Island who lost a parent at the World Trade Center.

And she took a special interest in the three young children of her neighbor, Patricia Puama, 33, who died in the attack. Two of the students attended PS 8; the third was 18 months old at the time of the tragedy.

"Mrs. Palma-McSherry took these children under her wing, let them stay at her house, cooked for them and took them on family outings," said Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, who tapped Palma-McSherry to receive the 10th Annual Patrick Daly Award in Education.

Mobilization force

"She mobilized the students and faculty of the school to care for and support all the families who lost loved ones during 9/11."

The Daly Award was named in honer of Staten Islander Patrick Daly, a popular principal at PS 15 in Brooklyn who was killed by a stray bullet in 1992. He was trying to find a truant student in the Red Hook Houses when he was shot.

Palma-McSherry was surprised by the honor, awarded during a ceremony at the school last week.

"I was simply doing what anyone would do to help those in need," she said. "One doesn't expect to be rewarded for that."

Previous award honorees include Arnold Raffone, retired principal of Intermediate School 51, and Dr. Mary McInerney, principal of the Hungerford School in Clifton.

Palma-McSherry, a mother of three, started teaching at Eden II School for Autistic Children in Mariner's Harbor in 1986. Later, she taught for five years at Brooklyn's PS 9 before moving to Staten Island.

"Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit..." What is so hard about that?

I guess not everyone has their car radio permanently affixed to the classic rock station as I do. There is no accounting for taste.
