The first Theme Thursday of the Month. YAY!!!1 This one was originally posted August 8, 2002. Since you're all familiar with how Theme Day works from the last couple of months, I can cut this shor

1. Cop's face is filled with hate
Heavens above he's on a street called Love
When will they even learn
Old cop young cop feel alright

2. Had some trouble with my sweetheart's Pa
One of her brothers was a bad outlaw
I wrote a letter to my Uncle Fudd
And I rode away …..

3. I seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines,
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens,
But I know what I'm needing and I don't want to waste more time-

4. I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

5. Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

6. We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

7. Strip off your pride
You're acting like a teeny-bopper run away child
And scrape off the paint
From the face of a little town saint

8. New York couldn’t hold my attention
Detroit city couldn’t sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won’t care cause at least I’ll know I’m home

9. Yeah, I was just thirteen
You might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high

10. Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love my own
Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone

No bonus instrumental today (don’t everybody all clap at once, ha!). Instead, identify today’s theme (5 points) and pair up the songs accordingly (5 points)

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

1. Cop's face is filled with hate
Heavens above he's on a street called Love

Old cop young cop feel alright

Nope

2. Had some trouble with my sweetheart's Pa
One of her brothers was a bad outlaw
I wrote a letter to my Uncle Fudd
And I rode away …..

Nope encore

3. I seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines,
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens,
But I know what I'm needing and I don't want to waste more time-

New York State of Mind, Billy Joel

4. I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

California Girls, Beach Boys

5. Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

Get Back, Beatles

6. We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

This is from the 80's. I will know it and kick myself. I can picture my friend Cari singing this, but she sang everything back then...

7. Strip off your pride
You're acting like a teeny-bopper run away child
And scrape off the paint
From the face of a little town saint

Nopers

8. New York couldn’t hold my attention
Detroit city couldn’t sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won’t care cause at least I’ll know I’m home

Some Texas song that I don't know...

9. Yeah, I was just thirteen
You might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high

Nopeish. I probably will know this.

10. Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love my own
Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone

Can't place it....

No bonus instrumental today (don’t everybody all clap at once, ha!). Instead, identify today’s theme (5 points) and pair up the songs accordingly (5 points)

Two of the songs have state names, but another I can't get also sounds like a state name song, so that doesn't work for me. I'm not even going to WAG this...

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?

Get Back is not a state. But you can get back to your state? Like Carry Me Back to Old Virginny?

Okay, I have no idea....

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

I don't even know what #2 IS, so I will put down Rudyard Kipling to be a smartass...

(Watch it be Shakespeare.)

California Girls - Beach Boys or David Lee Roth (And the Van Halen concert here got postponed for a second time! Oh well, this has always been a Sammy Haggar town anyway....)

5. Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can
Get Back - Beatles

6. We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me
Buffalo Stance - Nenah Cherry (Fishie loves this song (As do I). He's probably disappointed I didn't use it this time....)

7. Strip off your pride
You're acting like a teeny-bopper run away child
And scrape off the paint
From the face of a little town saint

8. New York couldn’t hold my attention
Detroit city couldn’t sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won’t care cause at least I’ll know I’m home
This actually sounds familiar...

9. Yeah, I was just thirteen
You might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high

10. Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love my own
Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone

No bonus instrumental today (don’t everybody all clap at once, ha!). Instead, identify today’s theme (5 points) and pair up the songs accordingly (5 points) - Not even close to enough to work with....

- J.J. Cale (Why not? Besides, J.J. finally worked his way into one of my dreams yesterday. He was on stage with some chick who I can only imagine was supposed to be KT Tunstall [Who's been promoting her new album on WMTV for about the last 6 months, thus the in-my-head factor], and I'm trying to get behind them to put up a chair. J.J. keeps telling K.T. to get out of my way. Don't even try to figure out what was going on, my dreams are just plain bizarre....)

Bonus aside to today's game... I just got back from getting my paycheck, and the last song played on the radio was from one of KT's favorite bands, the Iggles' Hotel California. So what's playing on VH1 Classic when I walk in the door? Yep... same song!

10.

Blanket WAG Houston, George Strait for the remaining even ones, and TN Waltz, Patti Page for the remaining odd ones. Wait, there's only one odd one left, and that doesn't look right. But I don't have any better ideas.

No bonus instrumental today (don’t everybody all clap at once, ha!).
How 'bout Washington Square by the Village Stompers?

Instead, identify today’s theme (5 points) and pair up the songs accordingly (5 points)
Looks like states and cities, though not necessarily capitals. If so, then 1-4, and 5-7 because Tucson, AZ is mentioned in #5. WAG 2-10, 3-8, and 6-9 for the remainder.

Bonus Bonus: Guessing #5 for the reason noted above.

Super Bonus: Marty Robbins (WAG)

Looks like it's matching based on cities and states, thus #1 matches with #4 (San Francisco, California). Based on that I'd say that #5 is the one that doesn't belong because it doesn't have a place name in the title.

Cities and State.
#1 matches #4
#2 matches #9
#3 I don't see a match for. I know I don't see "New York, New York" or "Buffalo Gals" so I'm stumped. I'll come back to it.
#5 doesn't have a city in it.
#6, #7, #8 and #10 I didn't get the answer
Let's say #3 matches with #8, #5 matches with #10 and #7 matches with #9

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?
#5 - Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona. So I imagine there's a song about Arizona or a city in Arizona. There's definitely no "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" and that's all I can think of.

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

1. San Francisco Night/Eric Burden & the Animals

2. Tennessee Stud/Jimmy Driftwood, who wrote it; I think Johnny Cash has covered it, too

4. California Girls/Beach Boys

5. Get Back/The Beatles

8. The intro to "I Left My Heart In San Francisco"?/Tony Bennett; WAG

9. Nashville Cats/The Lovin' Spoonful

10. Rose of San Antone/Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys; every & anyone else is just a cover version!

Theme is American City place names;

pairs are:

1 & 8 (I hope)

2 & 9

4 & 1 & 8 (oh, phooey)

(10 & (3 or 7) ) because I don't which of the ones I don't know mentions San Antonio

5 is the one that doesn't fit; guess it pulls stuff all together because people are having destinations (boy was that a lame explanation)

2. Jimmy Driftwood, (aka something Morris, I think; his real name anyway), is the author. He's the son of a singer featured on the Lomax series out on Rounder of old-time great ballad singers.

He's also the author & original singer of "The Battle of New Orleans" (set to an old-time tune "the 12 of January" or "the 8th of January" or whatever), & "St Brendan's Fair Isle" about St Brendan discovering America by accident, & many many more

Doc Watson has covered #2 a lot. As well. I think if you've got a much-loved live album not on CD, its got to be either Cash's or Watson's, not Driftwoods?

Well, I was assuming that the theme was State Names until I read that they had to be paired up...and considering that I have only 3 listed, and one seems to be the answer to the Bonus Bonus, I'll pair 3 and 4 and call it a day.

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?

I'll have to go with 5 as the outlier. I have no idea how it fits, since it doesn't appear to fit.

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

No clue here, since I have no idea what #2 is.

So....can you explain to me why the hell I'm still playing this game? We obviously have very little in common where music is concerned, and I'm sucking like crazy. Maybe it's a little like the proverbial train wreck...you just can't look away! :-)

THEME -- CITIES AND STATES
PAIRS:
1 AND 4
5 AND 7
8 AND 10
9 AND 2
9 AND 3 (EITHER 2 OR 3 MUST BE ABOUT TENNESSEE, I RECKON)

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?
GET BACK IS THE APPARENT EXCEPTION, BUT IT MENTIONS TUCSON ARIZONA (AND CALIFORNIA GRASS) IN THE LYRICS.

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

San Fransican Nights - Eric Burdon and Animals

California Girls - Beach Boys

5. Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

Get Back - Beatles

6. We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

7. Strip off your pride
You're acting like a teeny-bopper run away child
And scrape off the paint
From the face of a little town saint

Arizona - Raiders, with Lindsay on lead, IIRC.

8. New York couldn’t hold my attention
Detroit city couldn’t sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won’t care cause at least I’ll know I’m home

9. Yeah, I was just thirteen
You might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high

Nashville Cats - Spoonful

Get Back has the place names in the lyrics, Tuscon Arizona, and California grass, which could link yp with eithre Beatles or Beach Boys. I will guess Beatls.

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

1. Cop's face is filled with hate
Heavens above he's on a street called Love
When will they even learn
Old cop young cop feel alright

SAN FRANCISCAN NIGHTS - ANY COMBINATION OF ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS

I also gave full credit to San Francisco Nights

2. Had some trouble with my sweetheart's Pa
One of her brothers was a bad outlaw
I wrote a letter to my Uncle Fudd
And I rode away …..

TENNESSEE STUD - TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD or JOHNNY CASH

This is my Super Dork of the Day selection, I'll explain in the bonus section

3. I seen all the movie stars in their fancy cars and their limousines,
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens,
But I know what I'm needing and I don't want to waste more time-

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND - BILLY JOEL

4. I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world

CALIFORNIA GIRLS - BEACH BOYS or DAVID LEE ROTH

5. Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

GET BACK - THE BEATLES

6. We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me

BUFFALO STANCE - NENEH CHERRY

This was one I changed. I originally had Shuffle Off to Buffalo. But, unless somebody put Harry Warren or Una Merkel, they'd likely wag with any and all old crooners and standards singers. Which would require fact checking on my part (and we all know how I hate that. Ha!). So when I saw it I thought 'why the hell didn't I just use Buffalo Stance?' I wanted to use the part about the nasty girls with padded bras drinking beer through straws, but I couldn't remember the exact lines.

7. Strip off your pride
You're acting like a teeny-bopper run away child
And scrape off the paint
From the face of a little town saint

ARIZONA - MARK LINDSAY

I also gave full credit for Paul Revere & the Raiders, since it was on some of their compilation albums. Sort of a Tom Petty situation.

8. New York couldn’t hold my attention
Detroit city couldn’t sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won’t care cause at least I’ll know I’m home

TEXAS WHEN I DIE - TANYA TUCKER

I think this is the first stumper of the month.

9. Yeah, I was just thirteen
You might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high
When I heard a couple new-sounding tunes on the tubes
And they blasted me sky-high

NASHVILLE CATS - LOVIN' SPOONFUL

Also gave full credit for John Sebastian since he's done it on some live solo albums.

10. Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love my own
Broken song, empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone

SAN ANTONIO ROSE - BOB WILLS and his TEXAS PLAYBOYS or PATSY CLINE

No bonus instrumental today (don’t everybody all clap at once, ha!). Instead, identify today’s theme (5 points) and pair up the songs accordingly (5 points)

CITIES and STATES

1 & 4 San Francisco, CA
2 & 9 Nashville, TN
3 & 6 Buffalo, NY (Brooklyn? Tbone, you should know any Bills fan worth their salt is going to use Buffalo if at all possible!)
5 & 7 Tucson, AZ
8 & 10 San Antonio, TX

Originally, this was 5 for the theme and 5 for matches, but I gave 1 point per match. Melly and Confessor only gave four matches, but since there was only one possibility left, I gave them the full five.

Bonus Bonus: One of these songs doesn’t seem to fit. Which one is it, and how does it work in the theme?

#5 GET BACK It doesn't have a city in its title, but Tucson is in the lyric. I split this up and gave 5 pts credit for those who just gave a pick of #5, whether they gave a reason or even if the reason was wrong.

Super Bonus: Who’s the author of song #2 above? His live album is the one reason that I won’t give up my hi-fi (that it is also outfitted with a groovy 8-track player is a distant second).

All right, I've said before that I never put down the answers for any of the instrumentals and bonuses, I guess because at the time I figured if I wrote the question, I knew the answer.

So, I'm looking at this one thinking "wtf wrote Tennessee Stud?" Well, from my hint, it has to be Johnny Cash, because Live at Folsom Prison is the reason that I require a turntable (is it on cd? Still wouldn't be the same without all the pops and scratches, because there are memories in those). Johnny Cash wrote Tennessee Stud? Really? ASSuming that I looked it up at the time, I went with it. Had this been somebody else's question, I probably would have guessed Harlan Howard or Boudreaux Bryant.

So, those answering Johnny Cash get credit, those answering Jimmy Driftwood get credit and ghostjmf gets 9 points EXTRA credit for divining both who it really was as well as who I was trying to say it was. Plus adding in the possibility of Doc Watson (one of whose albums I do indeed own!)

And this is long enough, so both sets of points in the next post!
