It's been a while since I've reviewed a transcript.  I saw today's show and here's what I thought of Kevin.1. easy2. JTQ. I have zero idea. I was surprised at the high ATA percentage for the correct answer. 3. easy. I've heard of Mt. Diablo and know it's in California.4. pretty easy to figure out-chili is the only thing listed you could put into a taco.5. I thought this was going to be about COURT trials-I was surprised again. I figured the answer out based on knowing that camels are found in the desert, which is arid.6. WWOQ ALERT!  I have no idea, doubt the audience would either, so I use my 2nd JTQ. Boy, do they ask weird questions on this show!7. Now I use ATA.  It's pop culture-they should know this.8.Now I'm out of lifelines. I walk.

This was really dependent on where you lived--I was torn between California and Wyoming. According to Wikipedia, Mt. Diablo is only 3,864 feet high, so it's hardly a major mountain. Quickly review of that article didn't turn up anything else that would make it particularly famous, either. Yeah, probably intended as a WWOQ.

Although this one was just plain weird, I thought it was gettable if you thought about the comparative amounts involved (and maybe remembered the basic definitions of a calorie). I do fault the question writers for confusing "calories" used in thermodynamic measurements with "Calories" used in dietary discussions, but there's still a huge difference between the energy one could expect from a gallon of gas and the other choices.

(Atomic bombs, question writers? They don't come in a standardized size, so how big a bomb are you talking about?)

I thought Joyce and probably Steinbeck could be eliminated, based on when the authors began their careers, but I had no way to decide between the others. Maybe leaning towards Thompson just because it would have been the most surprising answer.

I'm wondering if he really retyped the novels to improve his writing--as in learning their writing styles? Or was it just longer typing practice to replace "A quick brown fox..."?

Okay, so I had to look up the other choices in the Calorie question:

A cord of white oak contains 26.5 million BTU = 6.68 million Calories.
A ton of (bituminous) coal contains 30.6 million BTU = 7.71 million Calories.
A (very modest 1 kiloton) atomic bomb contains approximately 1 billion Calories.

. . .
For me, the comparative amounts were the problem, except for the nuclear weaponry, which is no doubt off the charts. Since wood output is measured in BTUs, also coal, and since I have no idea how gasoline output is measured, I was stumped, even thinking about it on a comparative basis. I tried to google it and had to put the answer in the query to get anything.

The one ton of coal is worth many more BTUs than a cord of wood, but how many calories in a BTU? That all makes me think WWOQ.

She had wanted to see Newsies, but there really wasn't enough to do in NY for someone her age to make it the big destination trip, so she gets a day in Manhattan while her brother hangs with his cousins, then Sunday the whole gang goes to the Jets game. The For Real Daddy Trip is WDW.

There's no difference in kind between a dietary Calorie and a standard calorie, just a difference in magnitude: 1 Calorie = 1000 calories. Dietary Calories are determined by thermodynamic measurement, by burning food in a combustion chamber (calorimeter). The energy output is the same for combustion and digestion, as the net chemical reaction is the same.

Roughly speaking (within a factor of 2 or so), all carbon/hydrocarbon fuels produce the same energy per unit weight when burned (or digested). A gallon of gasoline weighing about 6 pounds is a lot closer to the approximate weight of food (say, 24 quarter pounders) equivalent to 31000 Calories then the ton or more for the other two answers.

Plenty to do if you like to spend a lot of money and sit still and be quiet. She's not the type for museums and we're not about to take her on an NYC shopping spree. She's getting a show, a trip to the American Girl store, and a visit to the tree at Rockefeller Center, but that's just one day. Keep in mind she has relatives in New York and has seen most of the sights so she's getting the Christmas lights. She even went to Coney Island last year and Steve never went until he was 50! I really meant "not enough to do that she hadn't already done"....
