Strangely I guessed it right because I really thought Aragon was a font. (no gut on Dobkin) The contestant must have thought the same since he suggested "Aragon bold." When I got home I was surprised not to see it among the encyclopedic listing of fonts in my Word 2007. No Dobkin font either. I'd go for it; under the current format, I'd never walk with $28600 (or $33600) even with no clue.

Um...this is not the episode I got on 11/20. We got Allison McKay, who is being advertised on the FB page as the Wed 11/21 contestant. So maybe I'll see this guy Wed?

I'm surprised there was even talk of a risk, this guy was literally in the best position possible to be going for $100k.

Is shellac common knowledge? If not, then definitely feels like they tried to throw a few curveballs in the middle tier to prove that the unrandomized stack is random, because the top 3 were a piece of cake.

They're only easy if you know 'em, of course. I never would have guessed Kate Winslet. I'm not sure why I knew Queen Victoria, but that immediately struck me as something you'd have to have known specifically, to have any confidence. The China question was easier (to me) than shellac, although if you don't know about the time zone, maybe railway seems like a serious option? I assume everyone knows a country that size would have to have more than one river and knows about at least Mandarin and Cantonese. Overall I don't think this was a case for ignoring question levels completely.

I knew this one because it was the same question that Debra McBride (from my taping group) had for $125,000.

Where can I find that transcript? Her show would have been 11/13/2002?

Gone to that great bit bucket in the sky...

Before we moved to this server/URL, the Bored was on go.com. Back when the show started, we were the official WWTBAM message board. When TPTB decided to cease their message board, a sympathetic webmaster gave us a new home, elsewhere on go.com, that lasted for years, but someone there eventually decided to pull the plug, without giving us the opportunity to archive the messages that were there.

According to common wedding folklore, what historical figure started the tradition of brides wearing white?
A. Cleopatra B. Queen Victoria
C. Catherine the Great D. Lady Godiva
Spoiler
Rob's first impression was to be honest he had "absolutely no idea"
Rob then said Queen Victoria was very proper and sounded like that was his leaning.
JTQ #1
... even after shown his guess was right, Rob said he is happy he jumped it
Answer and value
B. Queen Victoria
Value: $15K jumped
Bank: $14.5K
Mere said it was a lot that is jumped and is out of play.
Mere reminded Rob that he did not know the answer and he is still playing this game.
Rob added "and once I hit $100K, it doesn't matter, right?"
That's a good attitude to have - shoot for the 2nd round and it doesn't matter how much you jump over.

BBTranscriptTeam wrote:Rob's mom, Louise, is in the audience. Rob went back to hug her.
Mom encouraged him to try out for WWTBAM.
Doesn't anyone try out for the show on their own volition any more?
BBTranscriptTeam wrote:Question 7 - Level 6 Evolving Records
Before going "vinyl" in the 1950s, flat disc records were most commonly made with what brittle material?
A. Glass B. Formica
C. Tar D. Shellac

Rob decided to play it safe and JTQ
JTQ #2
Answer and value
D. Shellac (Mere said that was where Rob was leaning)
Value: $25K jumped
Bank: $14.6K
I'd have used a JTQ here also because "glass" kept nagging at me.

If winning all four major entertainment awards is a show business "grand slam", whose bases are loaded, with only one award missing?
A. Scarlett Johansson B. Gwyneth Paltrow
C. Jennifer Hudson D. Kate Winslet
Spoiler
Rob started by saying Kate Winslet definitely has an Academy Award, an Emmy? an Oscar? but asked himself what she would have a grammy for.
Rob said it is tough since they are all rather young and he hoped an older figure like Liza Minnelli would pop up
Rob said he wants to guess since the value isn't that much, and went for D.
Answer and value
D. Kate Winslet (Mere pointed out she did win a Grammy for a spoken word album (category Spoken Word Album for Children, in 2000). Emmy for "Mildred Pierce", Oscar for "The Reader."
Value: $10K
Bank: $24.6K
I'll be using another JTQ here.

Rob kind of liked font as an answer but also rock band.
Rob decided to go with rock band (audience reaction)
Rob backed off and Mere said Rob cannot pay attention to the audience
Rob then went with Font, repeating he likes font and could imagine "Aragon bold"
"I think I'm gonna go font, final answer, please , Meredith"
Meredith said he shouldn't go with the audience and she is glad he did not.

Answer

Time to ATA. And from the comments, it appears that the results wouldn't be very good. So I'd be walking away.

Rob says if he wins $250K he could buy a Saab. Mere punned by asking if Rob would be Saab-ing if he missed it
Rob decided he really thinks it is Kurt Vonnegut but is not sure if he wants to risk it
Rob finally decided to walk with $100K
Answer

Rob's bank $100,000-walk
