It was a rough question. As I understand it, Emily didn't deliberate very long in realtime, either.

I get why she went for Cosmo, but I think a deeper reading makes it clear this is a WWOQ. Emily seemed to see past the first part of the question, about "many linguistic innovations." Not that Cosmo doesn't have that - but it makes it more apparent the question was about a magazine that HAPPENED to coin "sex appeal," not which one was LIKELY to have coined it, if that makes sense. Plus, to focus on which magazine would emphasize sex appeal, you get one sensible answer, which is a big red flag on a Classic question like this. I would have jumped.

However, as I e-mailed Emily earlier, I absolutely don't blame her for taking a shot here. Ostensibly, had she jumped this, she would have guessed on the 250k. In that case there's a 3/4 shot she winds up with $25k anyway. If she thought she had a good guess for 100k, she should take it, lock that down (instead of a 1/4 chance at 250), and get a look at the 500 if she jumps at 250.

I thought it was Variety even without the choices, simply because they almost speak a different language. "Boffo" "Skein" "Cabler" The general shortening of words that oughtn't be shortened. I was fairly surprised that she didn't get it. Esquire and Mademoiselle talk about sex appeal just as much as Cosmopolitan, it's just that Cosmo has the biggest readership.
