I didn't see the episode, but I did pause a moment when I read the spoiler in the transcript about "Spaghetti Westerns", but then basic geographical knowledge kicked in. Have you ever heard of there being any deserts in Italy?

I, OTOH, thought that "Tabernas" sounded Spanish. Would I have gone for it at the blackjack table? I can't say.

No, but I hadn't heard of any in Spain, either. You can always get a WWOQ by happening to know the underlying facts, but to someone with no or limited knowledge of European deserts, the question screams "Spaghetti Westerns."

I totally agree, that was my gut instinct as well when I saw the q. And it's a known fact that western were indeed filmed in Italy, no? This is one of those where you really have to weight what you know versus common sense.

It is too bad that the contestant didn't recognize that the questions really was asking, "Which one of these actresses is young enough to be called a kid in 1992?" Then, the answer is easily Portman because the other three are in their late 30s or early 40s, so they would have been in their late teens, at a minimum, 20 years ago.

If you accept the classification that a desert has to be extremely arid or arid, but not just semi-arid, then there is a desert in Italy (Sardinia) and Romania, while Spain has 2 deserts, IIRC from everybody's favorite source -- Wikipedia.

Now, the tricky part might have been the general inclination of people to associate desert with sand.
