Back from New Zealand

I had a wonderful time during my week and a half in NZ, and I know I should be joyful, but now that I'm back home (after 18 hours of flying) I feel like I'm in serious withdrawal. I miss everything so much and I just feel like crying. Anyone else get like that after a big vacation is over? Or is it just me being a big wuss? I may have some trouble returning to real life -- I'll get over it soon enough, I know, but still. Sigh. :(

I felt exactly the same way after my first European vacation, which also was the first vacation I took after becoming a lawyer. Coming back to work and real life was harder than I ever imagined it would be. --Bob

Part of the sadness is just the tiredness of travel. You will feel better soon.

Now that you've been somewhere wonderful, you can return there anytime you want, just by closing your eyes.

I get that way every single time as soon as I see that "Welcome to Walt Disney World" sign in my rearview.

I'd say that what you're feeling is normal, but if it's something that you share in common with ME, "normal" is maybe not the right word.

Thanks for the commiseration and good wishes. I am feeling somewhat better now that I have had some sleep -- about 12 hours of it! -- after a very, very long March 1. (What with gaining back a day after crossing the International Date Line, March 1 was about 48 hours for me, about 18 of which I spent in the air and mostly unable to sleep.)

I finally got out of bed at about 3 this afternoon(!) and had a big breakfast at IHOP at 5 pm, figuring it would be my one meal of the day; however, since my spinach-and-mushroom omelette was the size of a Yule log, I brought about 60% of it home and may have some more later. (I made sure to finish all three of my Harvest Grain & Nut pancakes at the restaurant. Bix would probably not approve. ;-) ) I'll try to make sure I get to bed by midnight so I can get back on a semi-normal American workday schedule.

I plan to post a few other threads about New Zealand to help me process the experience and for your entertainment (and possibly your edification). Stay tuned.

Welcome back! Happy jet lag.

Where are you living now? I'm moving to Bernardsville in two weeks.

Welcome back! The same thing happened to me returning from the Super Bowl, but that was partly due to someone in my family group kindly giving me the bleepin' flu.

I know that this trip will always be a highlight for you. Over the next few days you will be living in the glow of it, not in the sadness that it is over.

What an oppotrunity you took full advantage of!
