Maybe he saw it but it was not deemed necessary to show the home viewers. I don't know if that's how it works these days.

I'm guessing it's like the old shows where they wouldn't show the contestants saying "Final Answer" during the first few questions, but they still had to say it. I'm guessing every contestant sees their stack shffled, but they just decide when they want to show it being shuffled to the TV viewers.

Unless something has changed, that's standard procedure. The first contestant of the show, if he or she is just starting, gets to see the pre-randomized stack. Anyone else on that show doesn't.

Just to geek up the discussion a bit, I think Peter Jackson must have been a fan of Patton:
