And by throwing in a bit of pop cultural (consumer cultural?) fluff, the question writers snag their first victim of the season. The answer had nothing to do with vodka, Justin. (And Galileo was Italian, but that mistake didn't affect the outcome.)

As Justin stood there in shock, Meredith explained that they were referring to Newton's concept of absolute time and space.

I thought the Absolut question was going to be either Pascal or Newton, because I associate them with math and physics. I had no idea why he was considering Tesla, because I think of electricity and (kind of) radio when I think of him. I agree with you that it seems that they throw in a lot of extra "stuff" into questions now. What would have been wrong with "Who wrote a famous theory on time and space in 'Principia Mathematica?"

Another shoutout to MissCaseyGirl's favorite scientist! This is still a terrible question. I know that Newton wrote
Principia Mathematica, but I have no idea what that means with regard to absolute or Russia. I hope I would have gone with Newton despite the dreadful distraction.

I remember talking with this guy at the Houston auditions this summer waiting for our on-camera interviews; I'm glad to see he made it on the show!

Note to self: keep a close eye on the categories before randomization. The "Absolut" clue might seem less important being that it's question 8 (difficulty-wise) and not one of the ones meant to be easy.

Meredith, you must be crazy. Justin is NOT someone you want to see in a Speedo. Justin also said that he learned to count from watching game shows. He billed himself as a game show fanatic (not his word), which made me say to myself, "cue the ominous organ music".

Justin, Meredith gave you the chance and you didn't take it. I knew you were in trouble when you said you thought Galileo was Greek. Tesla isn't Russian, either. But basically the question boils down to who wrote Principia Mathematica.

On the bright side, we were spared a Speedo run.

Just the fluff, I knew Newton wrote Principia Mathematica, so knew he was the answer. I had no idea what Absolut Vodka had to do with it.


The contestant was screwed by absolutely irrelevant info.


His knowing Tesla was Serbian eased him into the wrong answer (maybe Serbians like vodka as much as Russians? same neighborhood), or at least I got that vibe.

Sorry, I have to disagree with this question absolutely. Completely wrong about Newton, and the stuff they say is in the book ain't there. (although I don't read 17'th century scholarly Latin to know exactly what is...). N. was writing about gravitation, the movements of the heavenly bodies under gravitational force, and the mathematics needed to understand them, not musing incorrectly about the nature of space and time.

Something just occurred to me. In the green room, we were only allowed to watch pre-approved DVDs of previous episodes of Millionaire, and they were the same episodes every day (one of the APs joked about her love of watching $250,000 winner Jeremy Blais every day). Anyway, one of these was Anthony Anderson's episode, one question of which had to do with "Arfsolut" Vodka, so I'm wondering if that in anyway served as some sort of subconscious distractor as well (as in, the question that time directly dealt with vodka, whereas this time it was just a distracting element of the question). Anyway, morning thoughts.
