One of the Dave Clark Five succumbed to pneumonia earlier this week at age 64.

Also Buddy Miles, who was the drummer for Jimi Hendrix and had his own hit with "Them Changes," and was the voice of one of the California Raisins. He had been living in Austin the past few years.

I still have, upstairs somewhere, an actual record album by Buddy Miles purchased when "Them Changes" was popular. He was great.

The DC5 were one of my favorite bands, right below the Beatles, back in the heyday of the British Invasion. I still pull out my DC5 hits collection often. It may have been Dave Clark's band, but Smith was the guy who sang the songs. "Glad All Over", "Bits & Pieces", "Because"...them's great tunes, and there were many others. My favorite by them, and one of my favorite songs ever, is "Any Way You Want It", a ferocious, two minute blast of big grinning singalong rock-n-roll heaven. I feel 7 years old again every time I hear it.
Saddest thing is that he missed seeing himself inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by less than two weeks (March 10th). I'm not sure if they quite belong there, as much as I love 'em, but for Smith's sake, I'm glad they're there and that at least he knew they were going to be there.

We used to joke that "Them Changes" was on every album Buddy Miles put out. It sure seemed like it. Maybe because he released a lot of live albums.

I myself was a Denny Peyton fan, if the DC5 members.
