Maybe the writers intend the time travel "complications" to explain why Desmond had all those premontions about Charlie, but it seems to be an unnecessary and confusing tangent to the story.

Why doesn't 2004 Desmond remember doing those things in 1996?

How did Faraday figure out that the rat's brain was being fried because it didn't have a "constant" in both time periods?

And how does Faraday teach the rat to run the maze "an hour from now" if it's already dead by then?

Never was much for the whole time travel thing, not to mention parallel universes and the like. Too many things that don't make sense and much too convenient a way to manipulate inconvenient past storylines.

Since Desmond was at ground zero when the hatch blew I suppose it would make sense, sort of, that he would be most affected.

But we still learned next to nothing about the mission of the people on the boat or who controls them. And I doubt we will be going back their soon. I think there are only 2 more episodes to go before the next hiatus since they plan to push one of the shows already in the can to be a part of the episodes still to be shot.

I wonder if the new episodes will suffer significantly in storyline and production value due to the forced edits and rushed nature of their production. Probably so, not that I would be able to tell you which parts of the storyline had to be cut since I can barely follow the storyline now!

I'm trying to remember, but is this the first time we've heard about The Black Rock other than its appearance on the first season (which led to the rather abrupt disappearance of Arzt, one of my all time favorite moments on the show)?

And if so, was anything mentioned in earlier shows about its connection to either Widmore or Hanso?

I don't recall any other references to the Black Rock, either.

When did they say the ship had disappeared? In the 1840s? I thought it appeared to be a much older design than that.

The Black Rock was where Locke took Sawyer to kill Locke's father and the con man who caused the death of Sawyers parents, played by Kevin Tighe. Of note, and in the usual fashion, the characters name is Anthony Cooper (among his many aliases which included Tom Sawyer, which is how Sawyer got his name) and Cooper was the mentor of the 17th century philosopher John Locke.

Danielle also shows up at the Black Rock in this episode getting more dynamite that was to be used to blow up the others in the ambush on the beach.

This episode, "The Brig", was near the end of Season 3. Of note Wiki says that the Captain of the Black Rock was Magnus Hanso.

And of course "Black Rock" is nickname for Magnetite. No doubt just a coincidence...

My take on it may vary from the one you guys have.

Yes, time travel has been done to death (where is our old buddy, the dead horse?). This time, however, it would seem that they are trying to do it right.

1) a consciousness shift, not actual travel (overcomes Hawking's chronology protection conjecture)

2) Explains the disease that affected Rousseau's crew, et. al.

3) Shows why Rousseau wasn't afflicted (her constant, Alex)

4) presents the possibility that the flashbacks are really consciousness shifts

5) Daniel's scribblings in notebook & on chalkbored both had some real science in this area (e.g. the Minkowski(!) diagrams on/in both).

I get the sense this is where we were headed from the beginning, so I don't sense that it is covering up any prior storyline failures.

I also expect significant 'boatie' action the next two epis.

The Black Rock was significant in last fall's online buildup to this season (that is what they were looking for when they 'discovered' flight 815)

Widmore, Hanso & Paik (Sun's dad) were all part of the online backstory between seasons 2 & 3.

I don't think we have had any connection between them & the Black Rock previously, however. (unless it was part of Find815)

About 1881 according to Wiki which sounds right accorcing to my memory of the show last night. Perhaps the journal of the ship will prove important?

Another thing that occurred to me is that we know that the child of Claire is a problem of some sort between Kate and Jack. Jack and Claire are half siblings so the child is Jack's nephew. But at least to this point they are unaware of the connection.

Apparently we do get at least a bit more about the boat in episode 7.
