My daughter has been named a People to People ambassador for this summer. That's the good news. The bad news is that we have to raise $6000 for her trip. Does anyone have any experience with this group and/or have any ideas for fundraising? Any help would be appreciated.

Maddie was nominated to the People to People program. We didn't do it because the trip was way overpriced.

One of friends did the trip and was in London during the subway bombings. It was difficult for the friend's mom to get information about the well-being of her daughter.

Both my older boys have been nominated several times, we too have declined due to the price of the trip.

A classmate of my oldest did go about two years ago - Australia I think. he enjoyed the trip and had a good time.

Maddie's quiz bowl coach is part of an organization that does high school trips called ACIS.

Maddie is doing a trip to London in 2009 called Showtime. The trip is centered around London and the kids visit Windsor Castle, Oxford, St. Paul's Cathedral, Stonehenge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, and Salisbury. In addition, the trip included 3 Theater Performances and acting workshops at the Globe Theatre. Maddie will get six units of college credit for the trip. Total cost, $3,139.

I know nothing about the organization.

I do have an opinion about encouraging kids to take advantage of opportunities. I say - encourage!

This would be a great time to have her learn about working for what she wants and to discover how much she really wants something and how much work she is willing to do to get it.

It would be a great time for you to be her partner is some financial goal project. One year, Pealette and I had a project - I made muffins and she sold them door to door. She learned so much during that project - the growth she had in being able to start speaking when the door opened made a difference for her.

I say - so what the trip is overpriced (if, in fact it is). Deflating an opportunity your daughter has because of money may not be worth it.

DO NOT pay for the trip - have her earn it (with your help).

Maddie is paying for half of her trip to London, we are paying for the rest.

We probably would have paid for half of the People to People trip, but she decided that it wasn't worth the money.

I think that it's an important part of the process to evaluate if something is worth the money you are going to end up paying.

In this case the London trip is less than half the price that it would have cost to go to Australia.

I would pay twice as much to go to Australia as I would pay to go to London.

Not sure I would make that choice when I was Maddie's age, but I am sure I would choice today.
