Technically it wasn't a botched experiment - at least in the original version of the story. Bruce Banner went out to try and save Rick Jones, a teenager who was taking a dare to drive out onto the test range. Banner pushed Rick into a trench which protected Rick from the explosion, but Banner was caught in the gamma-ray burst.

Yes indeed, several times. On one memorable occasion, I was almost late meeting Tribe when he still lived in Denver because The Tattered Cover had me in its clutches and wasn't going to let me go...
