Hi there. My first post on this new bored. I did try to post a week ago regarding my seeing PSM's daughter at mock trial, but my computer wouldn't let me register. This computer did. I may see PSM Jr. again on Tuesday since I'm presiding over one of the two semis. Will she be on the defense team this time? I've seen two of the final four teams already, so there's a 50-50 chance of my seeing her school again, but since I saw their "ghost team" (which played as a scrimmage due to there being an odd number of teams playing) I don't know if she'll be involved. And BTW, I know several parents and coaches in mock trial (I've been involved for 23 years in various capacities - coach, attorney scorer, judge), so I've had a lot of practice at remaining neutral. Judges know many lawyers, so you don't DQ yourself unless there's a relative or major friendship involved.

Maddie will be there on Tuesday and hopefully Saturday to root for her team. :) Her coaches put all of the Freshman and Sophmores on the "ghost team" that you saw, so she won't actually be competing in the finals.

Wow, it does indeed seem as if all the "old" posters are coming back, and that's a good thing.

Especially ones who are in the Top 100 of the Bored rankings. :)

What was the outcome of that close match between the ghost team and that high-ranking team? Last I heard, you were waiting for the official scores to be released.

It figures that you'd have an interest in the "gh0st" team!

The ghost team lost by three points, which isn't very much.

The non-ghost team beat this highly ranked team on Thursday.

Maddie's team won in the semis tonight, putting them in the finals on Saturday, when each of the two finalists will go once on prosecution and once on defense. I'll be there as a scorer, not sitting on the bench, for the first session. I'll be seeing their prosecution for the first time.

She was so happy last night. The team went out to eat after the competition, but she came home, because she has a Biology test today and a huge presentation to give for her English class.

On Saturday, her Quiz Bowl team is competing for the Southern California State Championships, but she already told her Quiz Bowl coach that she couldn't go if her Mock Trial team made it to the finals. (The Quiz Bowl team won second place at a tournament two weeks ago and Qualified for a place at the Nationals in Chicago in May.)

It's kind of sad, but she loves Mock Trial more than Quiz Bowl.

But it's the seniors and juniors who are in the Mock Trial finals, not her ghost team, right? It seems to me that showing up to be a competitor on the Quiz Bowl team would be more important than being in the rooting section for the Mock Trial team.

Maddie and I both believe that she gains valuable experience watching the matches. She also has been videotaping the games for her coach.

I also think that she needs to pay her dues and show her commitment to her Mock Trial team or they won't pick her to be on the team next year.

She also gets a grade for Mock Trial and I don't want her to ruin her 4.0.

I'm also surprised she'd rather watch Mock Trial than do Quiz Bowl. If you'd like, I can issue an injunction prohibiting the team from punishing her if she doesn't go on Saturday. ;-) Anyway, I seriously doubt her teacher who seems so nice would give her a B for skipping a watching session for a QB tourney. BTW, Matthew did QB and went to Chicago for a national tourney. He loved it. Good practice for working for J!

Thaks for the offer of the injunction. :) Her teacher might let her get away with not going on Saturday it, but Maddie personally doesn't want to be "high maintenance" with conflicts because she really wants to be on the team next year. She also wants to see what the caliber of play is like at the County Finals because she wants to be able to improve her own game. Maddie wrote the opening and the closing for her ghost team, but she has realized after watching some of the games, that it wasn't very polished. She's a bit of a perfectionist.

Maddie's quiz bowl team qualified for Nationals three weeks ago, so she will be going to Chicago in May. :) (I am actually letting her go, without offering to Chaperone, which is a big step for me.)

Her high school is going to have major budget cuts for next year. This year she is doing zero period so she can leave early to do quiz bowl in HB. (She goes back to school for Mock Trial from 6:00 - 9:00.) I am being told that there will be no zero periods next year, so she will not be out of school early enough for Quiz Bowl practice in Huntington Beach.

I told her Quiz Bowl coach about the cutbacks and he said that although he would like her to come to practice, he still wants her on the team, even if she doesn't come to practice. At the last tournament, she was ranked #11 in the entire field, which is pretty good for a Freshman.
